information from Seattle Police Blotter

A homeowner reported that he fired a gun at someone breaking into his house.  Ten minutes later, a 35-year-old man showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound.

On Sunday, July 15th, at approximately 4:15 am, a Ballard resident was at home sleeping in the 6700 block of 25th Avenue NW when he heard what sounded like someone breaking into this house.  The resident armed himself with a handgun and discovered the burglar had already broken into an enclosed mudroom and was attempting to break into the main house. The homeowner fired a shot through the door window and into the mudroom.  The homeowner then called 911 and officers responded.

Frame of mind factored in famously for the West Seattle Little League baseball 9-11 age All-Stars on Mon., July 16, at the Pacwest Fields.
Following an opening round loss in which the Westsiders watched nine third strike calls cross the plate, WS rebounded strongly to score in bunches for a 19-4 three-inning elimination of District 11 Burlington-Edison at the 2018 state tournament. The early end was due to the 15-run mercy rule.

Fire destroys home on Fauntlee Crest SW; Caused by oil stained rags, $605,000 damage

A fire destroyed a two story home in the 8600 block of Fauntlee Crest SW early Tuesday morning. The blaze broke out shortly before 2 am and crews responded to the home in an area of twisting turning roads in Fauntlee HIlls. The home suffered major damage to the upper floors and fire crews were still actively on the scene looking for hotspots as the morning progressed.

The fire was upgraded to a two alarm briefly but then scaled back as the first responders were able to knock down the flames and get it under control. Two people and their cats were able to evacuate the home safely.

Fire investigators ruled the fire as accidental, and determined it was caused by spontaneous combustion of oil staining rags. The fire started on the deck and spread to the main living area on the second floor. Total estimated loss is $605,000.

A hero for our times

By Jean Godden

I have a new hero. Her name is Wendi Winters and she undoubtedly saved lives while sacrificing her own. Ms. Winters -- or perhaps I can be forgiven for calling her Wendi since she was a reporter who covered local events and wrote feature stories and interviewed young people. She was one of us.

Wendi was one of the five journalists gunned down in the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Md., on June 28. The gunman, identified as Jarrod Ramos, had written a letter vowing to "kill every person in the newsroom." His vendetta had to do with the loss of a lawsuit against the paper years ago.

On that June day when the gunman shot his way into the newsroom, staff members scrambled to flee and hide under their desks. Not Wendi. She grabbed a trash can and a recycling bin and charged the shooter. She was heard saying something like "No! You stop that."
