At Large in Ballard: Ballard Senior Center 26th Annual Gala Auction is Sunday, Mar. 24

By Peggy Sturdivant

Why call disasters a perfect storm?

Every year Ballard Senior Center somehow plugs its funding holes, and actual facility holes, while counting on its Annual “Spring for Seniors” Auction as its largest fundraiser. There couldn’t have been a worse time to have their computer network system hijacked and held for ransom one month beforehand.

The snowstorms of February were not helpful either. February is when volunteers solicit and gather donated items, sell event tickets, use the newsletter to build up the event. So when their computer system was completely disappeared during the snow events it exemplified the term perfect storm, as in a convergence of disastrous events.

His kidney cancer began at age 4

It's National Kidney Month

By Cynthia Flash

When Pierre Newsome was in high school in Anchorage, Alaska, he looked forward to a promising college basketball career – and perhaps even a chance at the NBA.

But the kidney cancer that he developed at age 4 started getting in the way and colleges were concerned. The All-American basketball player eventually landed a spot on the Seattle Pacific University team. But his kidneys failed his sophomore year. He ended up back in Alaska on kidney dialysis four hours a day, three days a week.

The most common treatment for kidney failure, dialysis is an artificial system that does the work kidneys no longer can do: remove waste and extra fluids from the body. In addition to requiring patients to be in a dialysis center for four hours a day, three days a week for treatment, dialysis often leaves patients fatigued.

Dieting In America

By Scott Anthony

I was hungry. I had a meeting at 12:30, and not wanting to go there with sunken cheeks and a too-tight belt, I pulled into Blimpee’s for a quick bite. I cruised the brightly lit menu overhead.

It’s gotten to the point in this country that you cannot find a fast food outlet that doesn’t offer some sort of reduced-calorie, low-carbohydrate meal. Not that I’m upset about this. While I’ve had my share of fat-soaked burgers and starchy, oil laden french fries, I’m supportive of the practice of healthy eating and I try to stick with it. A new study by online market research firm ‘InsightExpress’ shows that half of Americans who've tried low-carb diets have given them up. The survey shows that only one in 10 of us are on low carb diets, and the trend is down, not up.
