Everything must go; West 5 fixtures, tables even their iconic sign up for auction

The closure of the beloved West 5 restaurant on Feb. 12 after losing their lease was widely felt around the West Seatttle peninsula. The scene of thousands of meetings, celebrations, parties, and more, the last call was sentimental and packed with well wishers. But now it's time to clear the decks and owner Dave Montoure has put over 150 items on the the auction block.

Everything from the famous Best Western motel crown inside to the sign out front to the seats and light fixtures are for sale and the starting bid prices are surprisingly low.

What to prune, and what NOT to prune in February

By West Seattle Nursery

This is part of a series of columns prepared by the staff at the award winning West Seattle Nursery.

The Nursery is open for shopping, following COVID guidelines and they offer an array of trees, shrubs, bedding plants, garden supplies, decor and gift items. They are located at 5275 California Ave SW and you can find them online at https://www.westseattlenursery.com

Winter is an excellent time to prune trees and deciduous shrubs. They are still in winter dormancy, so pruning is less of a shock than it will be later in the year. Without leaves, it is easier to see the structure of the plant and make good decisions about where and how to make cuts.

Fireman gets his car stolen at the station and gets injured trying stop it

information from Seattle Police Department

#2022-038832/Southwest Precinct/Third Watch:

On 02-14-2022 at 10:13pm, an on-duty Seattle Fire employee parked his personal vehicle across the alley from his assigned Fire Station. While working, he heard his vehicle being driven and when he looked outside, he discovered someone was attempting to steal his vehicle.

The victim opened the passenger door to stop the theft, but the suspect accelerated causing him to be thrown from the vehicle.

The victim hit the ground causing minor injuries to his arm and hand. A second vehicle which appeared to have dropped the suspect off, took off behind the stolen vehicle, almost running the victim over.

An area check was completed but both vehicles are outstanding.

The victim received first aid at the station and was not transported to the hospital. Incident screened with robbery.

The spirit of West 5 will live on in Mac n' Cheese and Mai Tai's

The closure on Feb. 12 of the beloved West 5 restaurant in the West Seattle Junction after 19 years marked the end of an era for many. The restaurant's many regulars and fans in the thousands of posts about it on social media would often mention their favorites the Astral Mac n Cheese and their generous pour Mai Tai cocktails.

Good news travels fast and will come as much of a comfort as those two items have.

In a kind of post mortem posted on the Westfive.com website they shared:

"2/8/2003 - 2/12/2022

Our chapter ends here. But we are happy to pass the baton.

West 5 Mac N Cheese will be available at Peel & Press*. Go there now and get on their mailing list.

West 5 gonna miss u

By Matt Vaughan

Easy Street Records

Our brothers on the block!

Not just about the Mai Tai’s or Astro Mac n Cheese for me.

For nearly 20 yrs, W5 was the linchpin between old WS/new WS.

Owners Dean & Dave were childhood friends, Bison Creek Pizza delivery boys, everybody knew em.

When I first moved to WS, mid 80’s, got a job at Penny Lane Records. I quickly became friends with fellow hesher Dean Overton.

Slayer, Metal Church, Metallica, The Accused, 45 Grave, Black Flag, Scratch Acid…hooptie sounds of Sir Mix A Lot, Def Jam, Kool Moe Dee. Pre-grunge. I found a friend.

Lots of shows and road trips. Next door to Penny Lane was West Seattle Speedway & Hobby. Epic slot car races, on tournament days, announcer sat perched above, calling out the races, handing out trophies.

(20 yrs later it would become #West5)
