information from Funky Jane's Consignment
Since 1985 Funky Jane's Consignment has been a hub for culture and fashion in West Seattle. The past two owners have been women of color and both worked to make Funky Jane's an inclusive and safe place for all. Now the store is struggling after the owner did everything to keep her staff employed and paid through the pandemic.
"She [Panida Vilaythong, owner] has refused to take any salary, instead distributing any profit amongst employees," Holly Theriot wrote on GoFundMe. "She and the team have turned to Poshmark to increase sales. She took out a business loan and cashed out her 401K retirement savings to ensure she stayed current on taxes & rent. Having exhausted all options, GoFundMe is the last step to try to save the business."
Keeping Funky Jane's open means a lot not just to the three local women who rely on on the store for their income, but for the many neighbors who choose this place to find new homes for their beloved possessions. This is more than an economic issue, but one of preserving community.
