Blooms that brighten winter

This is part of a series of columns prepared by the staff at the award winning West Seattle Nursery.  The Nursery is open for shopping, offering an array of trees, shrubs, bedding plants, house plants, garden supplies, and thousands of decor and gift items. They are located at 5275 California Ave SW and you can find them online at https://www.westseattlenursery.com

Yes, it’s January and spring seems a long way off. But there’s still color in our gardens. Look for these when you are out for a walk.

Sasanqua camellias bloom from November through February. This one, called ‘Yuletide,’ starts blooming around Christmas time. The sasanquas are smaller and finer textured than the japonica varieties that bloom in April and May. They also take well to being trained as an espalier.

Man seen loading body into SUV leads to arrest on previous warrant

He was taking a woman who had overdosed to the hospital

by Detective Valerie Carson

Seattle Police Department

Police arrested a man after he placed an apparently lifeless body, wrapped in a blanket, into the back of an SUV Sunday night in West Seattle. After SPD’s SWAT Team served a warrant at his residence – causing an extended closure of a major arterial – the possible victim was found alive at Harborview Medical Center.

At 4:42 p.m., a resident in the 4000 block of 35th Avenue Southwest reported his neighbor had placed a woman’s body – wrapped in a blanket or rug – into the back of an SUV and drove away. The caller saw this on footage from his home surveillance system and shared the video with police. After officers watched the video and identified the neighbor, they learned he had a felony robbery warrant.

A short time later, the caller reported the SUV from the video was back at the residence.
