Spokane St Swing Bridge update: Flooded power conduit repaired as SDOT prepares to remove a damaged hydraulic cylinder

Bridge engineers are making progress on repairs to Spokane St Swing Bridge and getting ready for the biggest challenge yet

Information from Seattle Department of Transportation

Over the past ten days, our team of bridge engineers, maintenance crews, and technical experts have been continually working to repair the Spokane St Swing Bridge (Low Bridge) as quickly as possible. The bridge has been stuck since December 23, when the mechanical and electrical systems were damaged during a severe ice storm. We have made significant progress on repairs, including replacing 500 feet of damaged underground high-voltage power cable. However, there is still a lot to do as we prepare for the mammoth task of removing a significantly damaged 15,000-pound hydraulic turning cylinder, one of the two cylinders responsible for turning the 14 million-pound eastern side of the moveable bridge.

Pat's View: The need for human thinking inside machines

Regardless of your age, it’s obvious that the pace of change is accelerating. That alone is pointedly disruptive since human beings accept change unwillingly. The limits too, of our own senses, and abilities mean long ago we became dependent on machines to help us move things, make things, and so much more, each of them extensions of human abilities meant to serve human needs. But the way we managed change was through intuition and feel. Soon, that won’t be nearly enough.

UPDATE: Boat abandoned at Don Armeni boat launch finally removed

Update Jan 3

After multiple attempts, re-sinkings, and weeks of delay, the abandoned sailboat at the Don Armeni boat launch was finally taken away on January 3 by a crew from TowBoatU.S. At one point the boat was pumped out by the Seattle Fire Department, only to see it sink again and remain tied to the finger pier, a hazard to navigation and preventing boats from using that space.

The crew did not fully re-float the sailboat but using a diver, managed to attach airbags to it to get it off the bottom and able to be towed away.
