Alki Art Fair is warm and wonderful July 19- 21

The annual  Alki Art Fair is on this weekend on the promenade at the west end of Alki Beach.

Take in the colorful views while strolling the promenade, as you eat and shop among the expansive lineup of artists, makers and performers and celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of our local arts and culture.

Man arrested for vehicular assault after collision on West Seattle Bridge

Seattle Police arrested a man for vehicular assault following a collision on the West Seattle Bridge Friday morning.

At 3:26 a.m., patrol officers responded to a report of an injury collision on the West Seattle Bridge near the 1st Avenue South exit.

The Seattle Fire Department arrived and treated the driver, 33, and his female passenger, 25, for injuries. She was transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers determined that the man was traveling eastbound on the bridge at a high rate-of-speed and struck multiple concrete barriers before coming to rest quite a distance later.

Bank of America closing Admiral District branch

Bank of America has announced to customers that the Admiral Branch next February. It will follow another bank closure in the neighborhood, the Wells Fargo branch which closed March 24.

White Center street improvements meeting set for July 24

$1.9 million traffic calming project reduces 4 lanes to two and includes bike lanes

The King County Roads Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Calming project in the White Center business district is on 16th Ave SW between SW 100th and SW 107th Streets. It is scheduled to go to construction in 2025 and has been in design since 2021. Here is the project webpage. It is a $1.9 million project funded through a federal safety grant that focuses on pedestrian safety.

A public meeting, both in person and online is set for July 24 at the White Center Foodbank.

Teens with guns rob gas station on Detroit Ave SW

Information from Seattle Police Blotter

2024-193632/Southwest Precinct/Third Watch:

At 3:12am July 16, officers responded to a gas station in the 7800 block of Detroit Ave SW for a 911 reported armed robbery.

Officers arrived and were advised by the clerk that 4-5 BM/BF teens entered the store wearing masks and approached the counter.

Two of the suspects pointed firearms at the clerk, stole cash and grabbed an assortment of Vape products then fled the store.

A witness described a yellow vehicle driving from the scene at about the same timeframe as the robbery. An area check proved negative.

The incident was screened with the Robbery Unit.

Summer collegiate

Seattle's Studs pay a 6:35 p.m. Thursday visit to the Dub Sea Fish Sticks at Mel Olson Stadium in White Center.

The Northwest Honkers migrate in at the same time Friday and the Blackfins come for a 6:05 p.m. Saturday game.

 

Little League

PacWest opens state age 8-10 play at Snider Park in Poulsbo with a noon Saturday game against District 6.

The West Seattle age 9-11 team, meanwhile, opens state at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bombing Range park in West Richland.

Both tournaments are double elimination and continue into the next weekend.

Admiral Music in the Parks started July 18; Next up July 25

The Admiral District  Summer Concert Series has rebranded as AMP (Admiral Music in the Parks)  as they stated in an announcement:

"which is more in line for reality since we don't have access to Hiawatha Park for the foreseeable future and we wanted to bring  love to some of our lesser known parks.  This year kicks off Thursday July 18th 6:30pm at Belvedere Park (across the street from the Admiral Lookout). It continues at California Place Park on the 25th and then draws to a close on August 1st at Hamilton Viewpoint. New this year we have partnered with Soiree to offer the opportunity to preorder a picnic dinner and have it delivered to you at the concert.

West Seattle comes up short against Woodinville

West Seattle's wild ride back through the loser's bracket of the state age 8-10 Little League softball all-star tournament ended with a 12-1 loss to Woodinville Wednesday morning.

After opening the tournament held at Lions Park in Othello with a 5-1 loss to South Hill this past Sunday morning the Westsiders won their next two games to extend their Eastern Washington stay.

They pounded Glenwood by a 17-1 score Monday morning and overcame a 5-0 deficit to top Larch Mountain, 15-9, Tuesday morning.

Pitcher Grace Doull struck out 13 Larch Mountain hitters in that game.

But West Seattle ran out of steam against Woodinville Wednesday.

 

Major baseball

West Seattle met a similar fate playing at Aberdeen's Pioneer Park in the state Majors age 10-12 Little League baseball all-star tournament.

Luna Park Cafe is up for sale: Owner John Bennett is retiring

The future of Luna Park Cafe, a fixture in the West Seattle dining scene is uncertain, as owner John Bennett has listed the restaurant for sale.  Owner John Bennett is retiring.

The price? $250,000.
It has been serving West Seattle for 35 years ever since Bennett purchased the former Pat and Ron's tavern and remodeled it as a classic American diner full of memorabilia virtually everywhere inside. The cafe became famous for its milkshakes, speedy service kitschy decor and good food. Bennett owned Jukebox City and collected jukeboxes and a wide variety of items from metal lunchboxes, to signs, posters, games from the 50's and more.
