Seattle Public Schools shares safety and wellness updates for upcoming school year

Seattle Public Schools Superintendant Dr. Brent Jones shared a safety and wellness update with families. Among the changes are work staffing, behavioral health screenings, and collboration with the Seattle Police Department

Dear SPS families and staff,

I know the end of summer is a busy time of year and hope this message finds you well.

We always look forward to the start of a new school year—when students see their old friends and meet their new teachers. Seattle Public Schools (SPS) educators and staff are busy preparing to welcome students back to school!

The first day is a good reminder that student success takes a village as we work together to model positive routines for our scholars.

Despite many moments of joy last school year, the tragic loss of students to gun violence deeply saddened our community. These incidents, along with threats of violence, have understandably raised concerns about school and community safety.

Jerry's View: My Brother Russell

This is an excerpt from "Listen to your father: The life adventure of Jerry Robinson" our Publisher Emeritus who was born on April 6, 1920. He passed in 2014

By Jerry Robinson

You could call him Rusty, Puzzles, Augusta, Gus or even Little Spud Turkey Balls, but never Pus.

When he was a teenager he took on three guys. They were driving by in a car and yelled something at a bunch of us hanging out under an arc light on the corner. Russell yelled back and they piled out, looking for trouble. He whipped all three.

Nobody dared touch me. Carl Clogston knocked me down and tore my pants in a touch football game. Russell pounded him into the cement, then straddled him and dripped his own bloody nose over Carl's prostrate form. I thought it was great.

Viewpoint Pond getting some needed maintenance

Viewpoint Pond on Juneau Street SW in West Seattle’s Highpoint has been drained to remove silt, and invasive species. The Highpoint homeowners association sponsors this kind of work every five to seven years.

Normally the pond, fed by rainwater and runoff is kept at a reasonably shallow depth The collected rainwater then flows from the pond to Longfellow Creek and the West Seattle watershed. The pond collects most of the rainfall from the High Point Community and will fill naturally with rainfall in the coming months.

The pond can hold a maximum of 7.3 million gallons of water which could fill 11 Olympic sized swimming pools.

The path around the pond is a quarter mile in length.
