Seattle Public Safety Survey reveals shifting concerns in Southwest Precinct

The Seattle University Department of Criminal Justice recently held its final Micro Community-Policing dialogue of summer 2024 for the Southwest Precinct, presenting findings from the 2023 Seattle Public Safety Survey. Dr. Jackie Helfgott, Professor and Director of the Crime & Justice Research Center, shared key insights into community perceptions of safety and policing.

The 2023 survey, which garnered over 11,000 responses citywide, revealed some notable shifts in public concerns. For the first time, traffic safety emerged as the top citywide concern, followed by police capacity and property crime. In the Southwest Precinct specifically, police capacity remained the primary concern, with traffic safety dominating narrative comments.

Have a conversation with a cop at "Hops with the Cops" Sept. 4

The Seattle Police Foundation is hosting a "Hops with the Cops" event on WednesdaySept. 4 at Elliott Bay Brewing, giving people a chance to have a casual conversation with local police officers. The event will run from 5 to 8pm.

  • Alcohol will not be provided by Seattle PD
  • Must be 21+ or older to consume alcohol

Reid Hale

Reid Emory Hale, of Bothell, WA died peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the age of 93. Reid was born on December 21, 1930, in Yakima, Washington to Emory and Gladys Hale. He moved to western Washington when his father took the role of Chief Enforcement Officer for the Washington State Liquor Control Board.

High winds knockout power on Sunday

High winds that blew up from the south in the wake of a lighting storm on Saturday night striking the south end hard with parts of Gregory Heights number more than 6300 out since 4:32pm. Restoration was not expected until after 11pm. Outages also happened in SeaTac, Latona, Southern Heights and Boulevard Park with restoration expected between 6pm and 11pm.

Another 2,221 were out east and west of HWY 99 extending north up to South Seattle College along 15th and 16th SW. Restoration again was expected around 11pm.

The total number of customers affected was 26.541.

Airborne Entrepreneur: Dave Myers brings unique flying experience to Seattle

Dave Myers, a 63-year-old former carpenter turned pilot, has touched down in Seattle as part of a remarkable 10,000-mile road trip, offering locals and tourists alike a chance to experience flight in his unique aircraft. Myers operates Amphibian Air, a business that combines his passion for flying with a nomadic lifestyle. His vehicle of choice is a weight shift control aircraft, often referred to as a "trike" due to its three-wheeled configuration.

This special light sport aircraft, which Myers affectionately calls "Mellow Bird," can reach altitudes of up to 10,000 feet, though he prefers to cruise between 1 to 1,000 feet above the water.

Mark F. Myers

Mark Francis Myers passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 69 in Burien, WA. Born December 11, 1954, in Yakima, WA.  Mark was known for his personality, marked by a great sense of humor and a kind, loving nature. He was profoundly dedicated to both his career and his family, particularly his son, Michael Myers.

Sandoval recently took the reins of the beloved Alki Cafe, a staple of the West Seattle community for about three decades, and is eagerly anticipating the arrival of his son later this month.

With over a decade of experience in the hospitality industry, Sandoval brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. His background includes stints at various restaurants, including BJ's and local establishments in his hometown in Humboldt County, California. However, it was his time in project management that honed the skills he now applies to running Alki Cafe.

The dashboard, designed with the end-user in mind, is a user-friendly resource that will empower residents with real-time, quantitative housing availability insights. Through the provision of the dashboard, the Department of Assessments utilizes the informational power of its property tracking database to add value to affordable housing insights and solutions. Dashboard visitors find information on housing availability segmented by income levels and housing cost. The dashboard contrasts demand and housing quantities, revealing housing surpluses or shortages grouped by income and affordability levels.
