Fine Baking Co. grand opening brings custom cupcakes and more to West Seattle

Chely Fit Smithgall is a woman of many talents and her new shop The Fine Banking Co at 6969 Calfornia Ave SW is sweet proof.

"I'm a cost accountant and I'm a Zumba instructor. But a couple of years ago I got laid off from my remote job because they closed the the department, she said. So it was time to shift gears

"I started just baking and I bought a printer for cookies just as a hobby" That printer allowed her to leverage her skill with Photoshop too, printing favorite images with food grade coloring.

"I started showing them to my friends and giving them away, and they all liked them!  I'm like, 'Oh, this might be working..' And I I don't even know when I started making cupcakes and cakes. I don't even know how it happened. It's so easy for me to decorate for some reason. And I didn't know that. So I just watched videos and then with trial and error I learned how to do everything."

Life in the Body: Greener Grass (a metaphor)

By Beth Dayo

(A column about the experience of living 'Life in the Body'—both within ourselves and as part of the collective body.

Recently, I was having coffee with a group of women who practice movement with me. As we were chatting, a few of them, mid-conversation, looked over and said, “We were just talking about how practicing at Bend n Move has lowered our reaction temperature.”

My response was immediate: “That almost makes me happier than the changes in your bodies.”

What made it more triumphant is the fact that they didn’t come to me seeking that “greener grass.” Nor do we spend time focusing on “reaction control” as a topic. In fact, no one ever said, “Beth, I really need help with how upset I get at this or that.” Our outside stressors are barely a blink on our radar within the studio.Yet, here we are—healing through connection and movement without directly trying to.

Jerry's View: We Never Died a Winter Yet

By Jerry Robinson

No wonder Dad was a certified alcoholic. Looking back, I can't blame him too much. He just got hooked on the stuff trying like hell to feed nine kids.

What a gang. George was the eldest; then Evelyn, Marion, Albert, Doris, Bernice, Russell, me, and lastly Norma. Well, not quite last. I had a little brother for a while. Six months, in fact.

His name was Lowell. He was injured at birth by a careless doctor. Brain damage made his left arm useless. But Mom believed that if you moved his tiny arm up over his head and back down often enough, eventually he could do it himself. That was a job for older brother Russell and me.

Recollections of growing up Schmitz

By Gayle Fulton

Emma & Ferdinand Schmitz certainly contributed much to the Alki and West Seattle open spaces. The family came from the beautiful Black Forest area of Germany.  Emma and Ferdinand knew each other as teen sweethearts.  Ferdinand emigrated to the US. and spent time in Baltimore, St. Louis, and Pomona, California before coming to Seattle in the late 1800’s.  He made a trip to Germany where he proposed, and this picture is their engagement picture.
