The Schmitz Twins reflect on Seattle and family history

The grand daughters of Ferdinand and Emma Schmitz share memories of growing up in West Seattle in a family that changed our city

By Patrick Robinson

On the mantel above the fireplace in a hand built german style home in West Seattle were the words of a family motto “Do it now”.

They called the home “Sans Souci” french for “No worries” and for the Schmitz family it came to represent that same ideal of confident action and living in the moment.

The home was built by Ferdinand Schmitz whose personal impact on West Seattle and the larger community is still felt today in ways well known and others more subtle.

Born in Duisburg Germany in 1861 he was clearly given to both impulse and determination. He chose to leave his home to stow away aboard a ship bound for New York. No small risk, for a 16 year old but his oldest brother was due to inherit the family farm with nothing left for Ferdinand. The risk of imprisonment and being shipped back was worth it for chance at a new life. Then his fears came true.

He was discovered.

Seattle Public Schools shares plan to close four schools to offset budget shortfall

Sanislo Elementary will close and merge with Highland Park Elementary

Dr. Jones letter:

Dear SPS Families, Staff, and Community,

Thank you for your unwavering dedication to our students and schools. We are incredibly grateful for your ongoing support and commitment to helping us navigate these challenging times.

Balancing our budget is no easy task, especially as we face a significant shortfall. However, our guiding mission remains clear: ensuring that every student receives an excellent education in an environment that fosters learning and growth.

Our Budget Challenge
Like many districts across the state and nation, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is grappling with a persistent budget shortfall. Declining enrollment—driven by rising housing costs, the ongoing impact of COVID, and a shift towards home-based instruction and private schools—has compounded the issue. Additionally, state funding for public schools continues to fall short.

Sound Transit approves West Seattle Link Extension design amid cost concerns

The Sound Transit Board of Directors voted to advance the West Seattle Link Extension project into the design phase during their meeting on October 24, 2024. This decision comes despite rising project costs, which have escalated from an estimated $4 billion to over $7 billion. The board also unanimously adopted Motion No. M2024-59, directing Sound Transit CEO Goran Sparrman to develop a work plan to address cost concerns and guide future decisions regarding the project's baseline.

The board's approval of Resolution No. R2024-22 allows the project to move forward into the design phase, which will provide more detailed information about costs and potential mitigation measures. Importantly, the vote to approve the design phase does not commit the board to funding the construction of the West Seattle Link Extension.
