Feltscapes: Lichens - A Contemporary Textile Exhibit on now through March 31

West Seattle artist's work is on display at the Labour Temple downtown

Flóra Carlile-Kovács, a fiber artist based in West Seattle, is bringing her innovative textile exhibit, Feltscapes : Lichens, to the Labour Temple in Seattle at 5030 1st Ave S, from February 1 to March 31, 2025. The exhibit is open weekdays between 9 am and 3 pm, with special arrangements possible via email. The Art Walk is on March 14, from 6-9 pm, and the Artist Reception is March 20th, at 7pm.

Seattle Public Schools will upgrade Chief Sealth International High School with BEX VI Levy funds

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is set to undertake major renovations and replacements at Chief Sealth International High School, thanks to the Building Excellence VI (BEX VI) Capital Levy which passed earlier this month. Close to 75% of ballots cast approved the measure. The levy, which will generate $1.8 billion over six years, aims to fund various capital projects, including safety, security, energy efficiency upgrades, major building maintenance, and technology upgrades. Taxes for this levy will commence in 2026

A key component of the BEX VI levy is the construction and renovation work planned for Chief Sealth International High School. Design work is scheduled to begin in 2027, with construction starting in 2029. The district aims to create schools that will serve the community for the next 100 years.

Mayor Harrell issues Executive Order to expedite Seattle light rail expansion

Today, Mayor and Sound Transit Board Member Bruce Harrell announced a new Executive Order to improve the coordination of City of Seattle (City) efforts to safely and efficiently speed up the delivery of light rail to West Seattle and Ballard. The voter-approved Sound Transit (ST) 3 project is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Seattle’s history and the largest transit expansion currently happening in the country.

Mayor Bruce Harrell's State of the City Address carried some potential impacts for the Westside.

The address outlined several initiatives with potential impacts for the West Seattle and Ballard communities. A key focus was on expediting light rail delivery.

Transportation and Transit

• Light Rail Expansion: The mayor plans an Executive Order to expedite light rail to West Seattle and Ballard, acknowledging the clamor for expansion in the region.

• Office Expansion: A newly expanded Office of Waterfront, Civic Projects & Sound Transit, led by Director Angela Brady, will coordinate a staff surge of up to 50 city employees to support light rail project design, engineering, and station area planning.

Everybody deserves a slice; The Neighborhood is a new restaurant with a time honored pledge

Jenny Almukhtar and her husband, Ahmed Abdal Wahab al-Mukhtar, are preparing to open The Neighborhood restaurant in West Seattle's Morgan Junction, taking over the former Peel and Press location at 6503 California Ave SW.

It reflects their culinary backgrounds and community involvement.The planned grand opening is April 2nd, with a soft opening planned for March 28th or 29. The restaurant's email is theneighborhoodws@gmail.com.

Schmitz Park Creek Restore spreading its message of renewal

Schmitz Park Creek Restore, a non-profit organization, has embarked on a series of presentations to spread awareness about their effort to restore Schmitz Park, its creek and take the creek to Puget Sound, bringing back the salmon run they maintain was part of its distant past. Their most recent was before the Greater Seattle District Garden Clubs meeting at St. Paul's of Shorewood Church on Feb. 17. Led by Executive Director Dan Nye - Legal affairs and Executive Director - Creative Brian Barilleaux, the group shared their vision for the park's future, emphasizing its historical and ecological significance.

Schmitz Park Creek Restore is a citizens committee that formed last year. The organization is focused on the park's fish, forest, creek, cove, and community. Their aim is to restore and protect the forest, reconnect Schmitz Park Creek to Puget Sound, and restore aquatic species to the ravine that holds the Schmitz Park forest.

Foster easily handled the Eagles in Saturday's Class 2A District 2 tournament opener.

The Bulldogs host Lindbergh at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

West Seattle 44, Roosevelt 41

The Wildcats launched out into the Class 3A version of the District 2 tournament by edging the host Roughriders on Saturday.

They play Bellevue in a 7:15 p.m. Tuesday game at Newport.

Chief Sealth was barely beaten by Renton in Class 2A District 2 action this past Saturday.

The Seahawks host White Center neighbor Evergreen  in a 7 p.m. Tuesday loser-out game.
