SAKA: State of the District states councilmember's accomplishments

Councilmember Rob Saka of District 1 has released his first-ever State of the District address, a "mini" version of the traditional State of the City speech, ahead of Mayor Harrell's annual address. The report details key accomplishments and investments made in West Seattle, South Park, Georgetown, SODO, and Pioneer Square during his first year in office.

Transportation and Infrastructure

• Saka, as Transportation Chair, emphasized the adoption of the Seattle Transportation Plan, which guides 20-year strategic investments2.

• A $1.55B voter-approved Transportation Levy will fund road, bridge, sidewalk, and transit improvements.

•Investments in new sidewalks were doubled, with at least 22% of all funding allocated for District 1.

• $2 million has been dedicated to neighborhood safety transportation projects in District 1.

Update: Sealth Principal Garcia-Morales has resigned; Vice Principal Hope Perry now in charge

Ray Garcia-Morales has resigned as Principal of Chief Sealth International High School. According to sources close to the matter an emergency meeting was called at the school on Thursday Feb. 13 where a statement was read to staff announcing his resignation. 

The District has been very circumspect about the matter saying only

"At this time, Seattle Public Schools can confirm Hope Perry is currently serving as interim principal of Chief Sealth High School."

Chief Sealth International High School Principal Ray Garcia-Morales has been placed on administrative leave following a 3am DUI and reckless endangerment arrest according to a letter sent to families by Seattle Public Schools. The letter reads:

Mr. B's Meadery in White Center set for Feb. 28 grand opening

White Center will soon be home to a new location of Mr. B's Meadery, bringing a unique and ancient beverage to the neighborhood. Brandon Eller, a White Center native and wife Krista are the owners of Mr. B's Meadery, soon opening a second location at 9444 Delridge Way SW, in the former Center Tool Rental building which closed in September. The grand opening is scheduled for February 28 at 3:30pm with a ribbon cutting at 4pm. A soft opening for Mead Club members took place Feb. 13. The other location is in the Fremont District.

Impaired driver arrested after crashing vehicle into occupied townhome

Information from Seattle Police Blotter

Seattle police officers arrested a 28-year-old woman after she crashed her vehicle into an occupied home in West Seattle.

Just after midnight on Feb. 13, patrol officers were dispatched to the collision in the 200 block of Southwest Roxbury Street. The vehicle went off the roadway, through two different yards and a chain link fence, and rotated nearly 180 degrees before colliding into the residence.

Police found the registered owner of the vehicle outside of her car seemingly uninjured. There were no injuries to the occupants of the townhome. 

The investigating officer determined the woman was the sole occupant of her vehicle and was seen crawling out of the driver’s seat after the crash.

Kennedy Catholic hosts Bonney Lake for a 7 p.m. Friday loser-out game of the District 3/4 Class 4A tournament as Mount Rainier visits Union of the Vancouver area.

Chief Sealth drops in on Renton at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in District 2 Class 2A action and Foster hosts a team to be announced in the same tournament at 5:45 p.m.

Evergreen goes to Nathan Hale at 7 p.m.

Jean L. Carroll September 29, 1926 - February 6, 2025

Jean was born to John H. and Alice Crowther, of West Seattle where she lived 96 of her 98 years.

An avid swimmer, she was the first one, at age 14, to swim in the brand-new Colman Pool (Circa 1940's) and claims to have gone to this pool every day with friends from her youth. She also became a local swim champion there. Then in her late teens she spent her time tirelessly plinking on the piano, until she got a job playing at the local USO for many years.

Jean went on to work at Rainier Bank, in the trust department, for approximately 20 years before retiring.

White Center to see pedestrian safety and traffic calming improvements on 16th Avenue SW

King County is set to begin a major project aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and calming traffic on 16th Avenue SW between SW 100th Street and SW 107th Street in White Center.

The project, which is scheduled to begin construction in the summer of 2025, includes a variety of changes to the roadway, including repaving, new lane markings, bike lanes, and sidewalk curb extensions.

Upcoming Road Work

Before the major construction begins, the county will replace a worn-out drainage pipe under the north side of SW 104th Street5.... This work will occur in three phases in March and April 20256.

• Phase 1: No parking will be allowed on the north side of SW 104th Street between 15th and 16th avenues SW for 1-2 weeks. This is to allow for construction equipment to be parked in the parking lane.

The Happy Lemon beverage chain was founded in 2006 by the Yummy-Town Group, a publicly listed tea culture company originating in Taiwan. They serve a wide variety of bubble tea drinks.  is a tea based drink that originated in Taiwan in the early 1980s.
