Mayor Harrell and Care Department announce new arrangement at Southwest Precinct

Mayor Bruce Harrell paid a visit to the Delridge Community Center on March 19 to announce that the city is entering into a Memorandum of Understanding to provide space at the Southwest Precinct for CARE team members. The City of Seattle's CARE Department, which stands for Community Assisted Response and Engagement, is a public safety initiative established in October 2023. It serves as a third branch of public safety alongside the Seattle Police Department and the Seattle Fire Department.

Key Functions:

  • 911 Call Screening: CARE screens all 911 calls in Seattle and dispatches appropriate emergency services.

  • Community Crisis Responders (CCR): These are behavioral health professionals who assist with non-violent mental health crisis calls. They work alongside police officers but are not law enforcement themselves.

School "Walk-In" provides perspective on education cuts

At schools across the nation on March 19 teachers, and others gathered outside before the start of classes to stage a "Walk-In" demonstration, meant to express their opposition to changes being made to the Department of Education by the Trump administration.

The dismantling of the Department of Education will have multiple impacts.

Potential Negative Impacts

  1. Loss of Federal Funding: Many schools, especially those in under-resourced areas, rely on federal funding provided by the Department of Education. Without it, these schools might struggle to meet basic needs.

  2. Equity Concerns: The department plays a role in ensuring equal access to education, particularly for marginalized groups, including students with disabilities and low-income families. Its removal could exacerbate disparities.

Nationwide "Walk-In" protest will take place at Seattle schools too on March 19

Communities across the nation are gearing up for a unified day of action on Wednesday, March 19, as the National Education Association (NEA) and its allies organize school walk-in events to advocate for the protection of public schools, students, and families.

The "Walk-In to Protect Our Students and Families" initiative aims to demonstrate to elected leaders the widespread support for vital educational programs and protections.

Waste Management truck overturns on Marine View Drive

A Waste Management truck went over on its side at the corner of 46th SW and Marine View Drive on Tuesday afternoon. It wasn't immediately clear how it happened, but the driver and assistant was not injured in the incident.

Traffic was held up on 46th SW. To right the vehicle they will need to bring in a heavy duty tow truck to take care of it.

There was some spillage that was covered in absorbent material.

It was unclear what route it was or whether it will impact garbage pickup in the area.

We have messages out to Waste Management for more information.
