Since we all know that Ballard is obviously the best neighborhood in Seattle, it's no surprise then that our beloved place brought home a score of recognitions from Seattle Weekly's annual "Best of Seattle" list. Most of them are for the many excellent restaurants and bars that can be found in the area, but Ballard is also now somewhat-officially home for the best mile of Seattle. The full list of "Best of" in Ballard can be found here. Below are a few notables.
"Best Mile of Seattle," Ballard Avenue Northwest
It's common knowledge, but Keegan Hamilton reiterates for us: "Nearly anything your heart desires can be found on Ballard Avenue Northwest from Market Street to 17th Avenue Northwest."
Located on the strip are The Walrus and the Carpenter, Carta da Oaxaca, the Tractor Tavern, the Sunset and "enough bars to drown a thirsty sailor." One could spend a lifetime exploring the road.
"Best Liquor Store," Ballard Liquor and Wine
The Ballard Liquor and Wine has been undergoing a transformation since the State stopped being owner. Since Ablom Mengstu took over, the liquor selection has been expanding, you can even buy beer now and the workers have "mellowed out."
"(When a worker was) Asked about the difference between his new bosses (who also own another independent liquor store on 25th Avenue Northwest) and the state, he replied, rolling his eyes, 'It's more relaxed. With the state it was ... stress,'" Hamilton writes.
Ballard News-Tribune reported on the changes last month.
"Best Place to Drown Your Sorrows," The Smoke Shop
While the title might sound depressing, The Smoke Shop has been around forever and has seen the good times and the bad of Ballard. So it only seems fitting that anyone with a sad tale can come in, squat down, have a beer, and converse with all the regulars.
Hamilton writes, "Although it's no longer legal to light up inside The Smoke Shop, the Ballard dive still has the cure for the blues: stiff drinks, friendly company, and a well-stocked jukebox."
