Our Gang Racing wins race
The Our Gang Racing team that includes David Bell of Des Moines as the crew chief took first place at the Detroit APBA Gold Cup hydroplane races on Sunday, July 14.
Our Gang Racing is now with the 95 Spirit of Qatar after switching over from the Miss Red Dot boat.
The team is headed up by Nate Brown, a former Gold Cup winner and is carrying the Qatar sponsorship while last year’s winner, the 96 Spirit of Qatar, is undergoing repairs in Seattle. This year the boat is being driven by Brown's nephew, Kip. It was Kip Brown's first win on the H-1 circuit.
Our Gang Racing is based in Preston, Wash. and is getting ready for this coming weekend's Seafair races on Lake Washington.
Strayer earns GPA award
Clarissa Strayer of Burien was among the athletes who earned academic honors at St. Martin's University in Lacey after posting a 3.87 grade point average as a sophomore.
Strayer is a repeat winner who is majoring in Criminal Justice. She plays for the women's soccer team.
T-Birds hosting hockey school
Seattle Thunderbirds right wing Michal Holub has been confirmed as an instructor at the 2013 Seattle Thunderbirds Hockey School.
Seth Swenson, Danny Mumaugh, Griffin Foulk and Michal Holub have been named as instructors at the camp. Other T-Birds players taking part as instructors will be announced in coming weeks. The Thunderbirds hope to announce a new lead instructor for the Hockey Camp soon to replace Darren Rumble who is now the Head Coach of the Moncton Wildcats.
Participants in the T-Birds fifth annual Hockey School are able to choose one of two weeks in August to participate in the school. The dates of the 2013 Hockey School are Monday, August 5, to Saturday, August 10, and Monday, August 12, to Saturday, August 17-all taking place at the ShoWare Center in Kent.
The 2013 Thunderbirds Hockey School will consist of six groups divided by age, ranging from youth to adult. There will be four youth groups: Group A for 6, 7 & 8 year-olds, Group B for 9 & 10 year-olds, Group C for 11 & 12 year-olds and Group D for 13 & 14 year-olds. Youth Group registrants will receive a hockey school jersey.
There will be an Adult group for players 18 years-old and older. The Adult group will feature a two hour on-ice session preceded by an off-ice video instruction session and will receive a hockey school t-shirt.
For the fourth consecutive year the T-Birds will have a Junior Prep Group, which will be geared towards 15 to 19 year-old players preparing for their upcoming junior season. This camp will be difficult and challenging; focusing on conditioning and pace. This camp will only take place during Week 1, August 5-10, of the T-Birds Hockey School. Participants will also receive a hockey school t-shirt.
Participants that register for both weeks of the Youth and Adult Groups will receive half off the cost of the second week of the camp. The Youth Groups are $220 ($110 for the second week); the Adult group is $300 ($150 for the second week) and the Junior Prep group is $350 (no second week).
Selected T-Bird players will be participating in both the on-ice and off-ice sessions of the Junior Prep Group as they prepare for the 2013-14 season.
The Youth and Junior Prep groups will receive an hour and a half of on-ice instruction followed by a one hour off-ice session. On the Saturday of the camp there will be a scrimmage game for each group.
Players interested in the Junior Prep Group are required to call T-Birds Hockey Operations Assistant Jeff Caso at 253-239-7825 to register.
There will be free wireless internet available in ShoWare Center for parents who wish to use it while their child is taking part in the hockey school.
