SPANAWAY - After two rounds of golf on the Lake Spanaway Golf Course, the Seattle Christian boys team drove, chipped and putted well enough to capture second place at the state Class 1A championship tournament that concluded on Thurs., May 29.
Woodland amassed 91.5 points to outdistance Seattle Christian's 63.
"Our goal at the beginning was to win state," said SCS coach Kerry Doss. "Other than that we accomplished all our goals, going 10-0 and 7-0 Nisqually League. We won the Chambers Bay Invitational, sub-district and tri-district. Overall, we had a really good team with four medalists. Luke (Doss) was the league MVP and Aaron McClelland was first team all league. Jake Ronish and Alex Hay were all league second team They may have felt more pressure today, but everybody performed admirably."
With only state singles qualifiers from the first day eligible to compete on Thursday, much depended upon Luke Doss and Aaron McClelland.
On day one of the tournament, Doss and McClelland each shot 3-over par 75's, positioning themselves for top five finishes. Doss had taken third the previous season. John Sand of the Hoquiam Grizzlies and Derrick Phelps of Zillah shared the lead after Wednesday play was completed.
Sand shot a 1-under par 71 on Thursday to medal at 144 while Doss shot 77 including a three-putt on the 18th hole to tie for sixth at 152.
"I was 3-over after two holes on Wednesday," said Doss. "I had two double bogeys, but birdied three holes to keep me even the rest of the way in my comeback of the round. On Thursday, I had some chances, but my putting was off. I was consistent on the course, but didn't take advantage of my chances. Nothing was good, today."
McClelland skied to an 81, citing several reasons for his difficulties on Thursday.
"I had three birdies on Wednesday and was putting pretty well and stayed consistent," said McClelland. "Today, I was a little off with the drives and didn't make putts. I had some three-putts."
The Seattle Christian player roster includes Aaron McClelland (12), Alex Hay (12), Jake Ronish (12), Ryan Johnson (12), Steven Laudan (12), Jonathan Thiery (12), Nathan Bryant (11), Luke Doss (10), Isaac Peterson (10), Jason Armer (10), Andrew Portin (10), Nick Pizzey (10), Mike Nguyen (9) and Nathan Laudan (9).
