On a night when seniors Jessie Blake, Megan Brennan and Emily Turpin were honored in the John M. Goodwin Memorial Gymnasium at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School, it was the daring young duo of freshman Alyssa Hoffman and junior Allison Hargett that spurred Lancer scoring in a second place team score of 126.6 behind Renton (132.6) and ahead of Lindbergh (122.1) on Thurs., Jan. 29, as the girl gymnasts prepared for the Feb. 6 Seamount League meet at Mt. Rainier High School.
Hoffman swung on the uneven parallel bars for second place at 6.4 and tumbled to a floor routine of 7.5 for another second place as positions in the top five of individual events to aid her AA aggregate score of 28.85 in a runner up all-around total.
"I was good in practices and tonight's competition," Hoffman said. "I was better on the floor and had a strong routine on bars. All I want to do is go as far as I can."
Included in the evening resume for Hargett's 27.6 third place AA was a third place ribbon on the floor with a 7.4, a 5.6 fourth spot on bars and a 7.9 fifth place on vault.
"I did well on the vault," she said. "It was my best score. And I did better on the bars, as well."
On the bars, Lancer Megan Brennan notched a fifth place 5.5 while Delaney Ochs had 7.0 for fifth on the balance beam.
"it's been a struggle with injuries and the flu," said Kennedy Catholic head coach Kim Katzenberger. "One of our all-arounds, Emily Hargett, has been out the last two meets with a serious finger injury, Allison is competing with a swollen knee. Due to a school grant, we have a nutritionist helping athletes on their diets and that has helped. Parents have pamphlets from the nutritionists and I know what the girls eat. Our hopes are that the doctors can release the girls that have been out with injuries. We'd like to get four gymnasts to district. Renton's new coach (Allen Lee) from South Carolina was a club coach, also, and has really gotten them into shape."
Renton's team victory was built on top five placings on each individual event. The Indians' Kimberly Hoang earned 27.4 points in a fourth place all-around performance. Teammates Emily Yoshioka and Sandy Williams tied for fifth in the AA.
Jenna Louie of Lindbergh swept to first place on each individual event to claim the all-around championship. In the vault, she tallied 8.4 points and also swung to 6.9 on the bars. Her beam score was 9.3 in tandem with a 7.8 on floor.
