Saturday, April 28 was a big day in White Center as Starbucks, in collaboration with SeattleWorks hosted a service project as part of its second annual Global Month of Service. Eight teams of people from an estimated 150 who volunteered spread out across the neighborhood to work on cleaning up and sprucing up parks, and more.
This project is one of many projects taking place throughout the month of April. The month is a celebration of Starbucks commitment to helping communities thrive. As with last year, thousands of partners, customers and community organizations around the world are coming together to participate in service projects that address their local community needs.

Next up was King County Councilmember Joe McDermott , who also volunteered, and spoke to the group and in turn introduced Kevin Brown of King County Parks and Recreation. Sili Savusa Executive Director of the White Center Community Development Association spoke briefly and finally Tara Smith, Executive Director of SeattleWorks gave the group final directions.
They tackled cleaning up White Center Heights Park, Lakewood Park adjacent to Hicklin Lake, built
"outreach kits" and painted a mural near 10th s.w. and s.w. Roxbury among other projects.
Sica said, "Doing this kind of thing is in Starbuck's DNA. I'm out almost every weekend doing something in the community and when you do work on things like schools, the looks on the kids faces when they see it for the first time is just great."
