Kennedy Catholic was looking for some revenge against the Highline girls fastpitch team Wednesday, May 2 after losing to them, 16-6, April 5. Kennedy was one game behind Highline and needed this win for the first place tie.
The Lancers' bats started off hot early in the game, scoring one run in the first and six runs in the second. Lancer starting pitcher Kate Lewis threw a great game, going 6 2/3 innings and striking out eight. The Lancers' bats died off a bit after their huge six run second inning.
The Highline Pirates' hitting started out slow, getting shut out in the first four innings but started their scoring in the fifth when Meghan Beswetherwick singled with Nicole Jacobson droving her in with a deep triple over the center fielder's head. Jacobson ended up coming around to score, narrowing Kennedy Catholics lead 8-2. The Pirates picked up one more run in the bottom of the sixth with a single from Taylor Gower, who then came around to score with a double coming from Sierra Flanagan. The Pirates had the bases loaded but were unable to pick up any more runs during the inning.
The Lancers picked up one final run in the top of the seventh when Sierra Baines singled, picking up her third hit for the day. Baines was pinch ran for by Jordan Cossette, who came around to score after a single from Jordan Nakatani, giving them the lead 9-3.
Highline had one final opportunity in their final at bat. The Pirates were able to get three more runs and found themselves with the bases loaded when it came to the last out but they fell just short for their first loss of the season as they were topped by Kennedy Catholic, 9-3.
Highline head coach Julie Young said after the game, “They had a big inning or two, and our bats seemed to be sleeping today. We needed to hit better against a team like Kennedy."
Despite the loss, Highline has a lot to be happy about, considering it took them this long to finally record their first league loss as they stood 11-1 after the game.
Lancer head coach Dino Josie was pleased with how his team performed.
“The pitching was great," he said. "Kate did a great job locating her pitches and did well against a great team, and our hitting did great as well. We got people on base, moved them along, and drove runs in when we had to. It was a good game. They got us the first time, this time we got them”.
