Weekend burglary foiled
These days, attempted burglaries tend to occur on weekdays while victims (and their neighbors) are more likely away at work. On Sunday, May 13, a juvenile male bucked the trend and broke into a 1400 S.W. Cambridge St. home around 3 p.m. Problem being (in his case), the victims’ neighbor was home and watched the suspect run through their yard. She yelled at him and the suspect ran off with a female accomplice who was keeping watch. Police investigated and found the young thief had scuttled through a dog door to get inside and stole a plastic cup full of loose change. The neighbor’s yelling scared him off and he left the cup of change sitting on the ground.

Attacks at mental health care facility
A patient at a mental health care facility on the 2600 block of SW Holden St. became very aggressive with staff over the course of two days and assaulted three workers. From May 12 to May 13, the female suspect pushed a medication nurse into a supply room, grabbed scissors and attempted to stab her (she escaped unharmed). The aggressive patient was put in seclusion, but later released. An employee sat down with the suspect and her mother later that day to discuss the incident, and the woman said she wanted to hurt the people who put her in the hospital. She then came from behind the employee and attempted to gouge his eyes out with her fingernails. The man was able to escape with minor scratches to his face and eyes. The woman was once again put into seclusion. The next day, the suspect was again released and attempted to stab another employee with a shank she fashioned from a broken plastic meal tray. They were able to subdue her once again, and this time called police. The woman will be taken to a mental health court to evaluate whether she should be sent to a higher security mental health facility.

Big copper theft
On May 11 someone stole $10,000 worth of copper wiring from South Seattle Community College. Unknown suspect(s) gained access to a maintenance building and stole 20 spools of copper wiring and 20 feet of copper pipe. The complainant believes one of over 30 employees with key access to the facility must be responsible for the theft as there were no signs of forced entry. He did not have a specific suspect in mind, however.

Robbery at knifepoint
Around 2 a.m. on May 13 a man got off a Metro bus in White Center because he believed he was on the wrong route in his attempt to get to downtown Seattle. The man said he was walking along 16th Ave S.W. near S.W. Henderson when a male started following him. The suspect produced a knife, put it to the back of the victim’s neck and demanded his wallet. The man said he didn’t have a wallet and the suspect went through his pockets, stealing $46, a debit card and the victim’s veteran identification card. He described his robber as a white male around 30 years old, 5 foot 10 inches and slender with a blonde crew cut. The victim was not injured.
