A friend turned enemy
It was 2 a.m. when a group of friends arrived home to the 6700 block of 16th Ave S.W. late last month. They had been drinking at a friend’s place and were all intoxicated. The owner of the house found herself in the backyard with a man she had known for two years. The man started playing with her niece’s pit bull. She asked him to stop and put the dog back on the leash. The situation turned violent when the man became angry at her request and shoved her to the ground. Standing on her arms, he bent over, grabbed her throat and said, “I could kill you.” She was unable to breath and started kicking, eventually landing a shot to his crotch. He let go and hobbled into the house. Once inside, the female victim asked the suspect to leave. He responded by shoving her into the couch, grabbing a pillow and smothering her face. She started kicking again, and he let go. He walked to the kitchen and grabbed a hunk of ham for his dog back home while the victim grabbed her home phone and attempted to call 911. The suspect grabbed the phone, walked outside and threw it onto the roof. She followed him to his vehicle to get his license plate number and the man attacked once more, this time grabbing her hair and tearing out two clumps before leaving. She was able to get the license plate number, and police paid a visit to an apartment on the 6600 block of S.W. Admiral Way where they located and arrested the suspect. The victim positively identified him as her attacker.
Robbery attempt on a quick-thinking accountant
Around midnight on May 26 a man living above his accounting business on 16th Ave S.W. saw a man and woman standing in the alley below. He recognized the woman as someone he met earlier in the day when a common friend brought her to his business and introduced them. The woman asked if he would come downstairs so they could talk. He agreed and let the two inside. The male suspect pulled a black handgun out of a blue bag and said, “Give me your money.” The victim said he didn’t have any and the female started rummaging through drawers while the male suspect pointed a gun at the victim’s chest, finger on the trigger. At one point the gun-wielder looked away to search a drawer and the victim seized his opportunity, quickly running outside. He called 911 and officers responded within two minutes. By that time the suspects had fled, but police arrested a female fitting their description riding a bike away from the scene. The male suspect was not located and the female denied any involvement.
Live-in burglar/stepson
A man called police to his 38th Ave S.W. home on May 25 to report his stepson tried to break into his master bedroom … again. The man said his stepson (who lives at the house) and his friends have ransacked the master bedroom in the past and stolen items to resell for drug money. To thwart the in-house thief, he always locks the hallway and balcony door, and installed a “portable alarm/noise maker” on the balcony. This time around, the man believes his stepson leaned scrap lumber against the house to reach the balcony, but triggered the alarm and ran away.
Repeated target
Someone burglarized an apartment complex on the 4400 block of Delridge Way SW on May 25 – the third time tenants had been hit in the past month. Unknown thieves broke through a small window panel and removed the large nails someone installed to keep burglars out. They stole a computer monitor, keyboard and computer cables. When police asked about surveillance video, a building maintenance worker realized someone had placed stickers over the camera lenses.
