The 1,600 meter events were the right distances for high Highline school district finishes in state track and field action held May 24-26 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
Highline High School won the girls Class 3A 1,600-meter relay and Jordan McPhee of Mount Rainier took the girls 4A 1,600-meter run.
Breanna Brookbank, Whitney Diggs, Colleen Pacholski and Tracey Stolz combined to win the 1,600 relay for the Pirates in a time of 3 minutes, 15.17 seconds and McPhee posted a time of 5:01.27 in winning the 1,600-meter run.
McPhee also came through with a solid second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:33.70 for the Rams of Des Moines.
Yen Hoang took first in the 3,200-meter wheelchair race in 12:53.35 for Foster in the 2A boys portion of the meet and came in second in the 1,600 wheelchair race in 5:56.93. Bulldogs wheelchair teammate Olivia Williams was third for the Foster girls with a time of 2:15.64 in the mixed 400-meter wheelchair race.
Raheem Howard of Tyee leaped to two top finishes in the boys 2A meet, taking second in the triple jump at 42 feet, 6 inches behind only the 43-10 effort of Tumwater's Lane Russell. Howard also came in fourth in the long jump at 20-11.75.
Anthony Manago of Foster came in third in the same 2A long jump event ahead of Howard at 21-07.
Kennedy's Brittany Bennett finished fifth in the girls 3A meet in 2:16.99 and Highline's Tracey Stolz followed in eighth with a time of 2:23.69.
Michelle Stolz of Highline scored a sixth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 45.99.
Foster's Prescilla Donkor placed eighth in the 2A girls discus at 108-08 and Sierra Parsons of the Lady Bulldogs was 11th in the long jump at 15-07.25.
Jamila Culcleasure of Highline took ninth in the 3A girls shot put at 38-01.25 and Kennedy's Danielle Carnahan took 10th in a five-way tie at 9-06 in the girls pole vaultH.
In the girls 3A relays, Kennedy Catholic came in fourth in the 400-meter event in a time of 49.93 and Highline was sixth in the 800 relay in 1:44.59.
Paul Toala of Highline placed 14th in the 3A boys discus at 125-09 and took 16th in the shot put at 44-03.
Athletes from Evergreen Lutheran traveled to Eastern Washington University in Cheney for the Class 2B competition.
Iraina Nitz came in 12th in the girls 3,200-meter run in 13:15.45 and finished 14th in the 1,600 in 5:59.50 for the Eagles of Des Moines.
Karissa Kjenstad of Evergreen Lutheran was 12th in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:37.98.
On the boys side for the Eagles, Jayson Kjenstad came in 15th in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 43.96 and Brendan Parker tied for 13th in the shot put at a distance of 38-10.
Highline had the top area team finish, tying North Central for seventh in the girls 3A competition with 25 points.
