Mark Ufkes, President of the White Center Chamber of Commerce is championing the effort to get a new library funded and built for the community and is asking the public for help regarding a meeting that will influence choices being made with regard to a final location for the building. A meeting set for Feb. 26 in Issaquah will focus on this siting issue.

He shared a letter he has sent to those interested:

The new White Center library needs your help today!

Using the New White Center Library as a redevelopment success for White Center is a Chamber priority. This is a wonderful opportunity to use the new library as a means to support redevelopment in the White Center business district. The King County Library System is considering placing the new library in the unincorporated area of White Center, as a benefit for White Center. The White Center Chamber of Commerce agrees with this strategy. There are some folks that want the library pushed further south into Burien, but this makes no sense at all, since it is our White Center library, and Burien already has two libraries.

The preferred unincorporated site is a large vacant lot on SW 107th (behind Yarringtons Funeral Home) at 15th Ave. SW. This vacant lot has been an eyesore for many years, and boy scouts removed six homeless camps and 1,100 pounds of mostly alcohol related trash at the site two years ago. The state controls the site and wants to work with the KCLS to do a joint project there. We love this strategy.

The benefits to siting the new White Center library at SW 107th are; 1.) It is across the street from our Mount View Elementary School so our school kids and teachers will have very easy access to our new White Center library; 2.) There are over 400 apartment units (many are family units) literally touching the library site on the south edge; 3.) There are over 200 low income apartment units directly across the street to the north, with many of them family and elder units; 4.) The large bowling alley/casino across the street from the site to the northwest has been recently turned into one of largest Hispanic churches in the state; and 5.) This site will allow us to use the library redevelopment process to improve the entire block and remove the vacant lot that has caused so many problems for White Center.

Send an email or attend the hearing. It starts at 5 pm. Everyone will have an opportunity to speak to the trustees and share your reasons why the library siting there is a good idea for White Center. (If you can not attend the hearing, send at email supporting the site to boardoftrustees@KCLS.org

Directions:

Go East of I-90. Take Exit 15 (first exit in Issaquah from the west); go south on Highway 900 (Renton -Issaquah Highway/17th SW)

While going south, then turn left on NW Newport Way.

Follow Newport Way (be careful) you will need to take a right to stay on Newport Way, because if you go straight it turns into Maple Street.

Once past this corner, while on Newport Way, the KCLS building will be on your left. The hearing room is on the main floor. Even if you arrive late, you will have a chance to testify.

Every one attending will be given an opportunity to tell their reason why we want the new White Center library at SW 107th.
