10:30 p.m., February 25. 55th block of 11th Ave NW

Police responded to reports of a stabbing in Ballard on the night of February 25. The responding officer spoke with the victim at the Ballard Safeway. The victim was extremely intoxicated. He said that he and three other males had been drinking together in a van. He said that he and the three subjects were all homeless and spent a lot of time together.

The victim said that he and one of the other males got into an argument and the victim grabbed the suspect around the neck and then the suspect pulled a knife on him and tried to stab him. The victim grabbed the knife, suffering cuts on his hands. Another one of the males took the knife from the suspect, but the victim said he feared the suspect would try to kill him, and he ran out of the van to Swedish Hospital in Ballard. He was treated for his injuries and released, and he then went to Safeway and called the police.

The officer spoke with another male who had been in the van and seen the attempted stabbing. The witness was also very intoxicated. The van was still parked where it had been before, but there was only one male inside, and he said that he had not been in the van during the fight. Police searched the area for the suspect but did not locate him.

4:00 p.m., February 25. 75th block of 15th Ave NW

A woman called police to report that she believed she had been shot with a BB gun or pellet gun. The victim said that she was standing near her car in front of her apartment building when she felt something hit her rear. She looked around and saw a gray Toyota hatchback driving away in the lane nearest to the curb. She said she saw a small black object sticking out of a rear window, and she believed it was a BB gun or a pellet gun. She said the occupants of the vehicle looked like teenage boys, but she could not give a clear description of them.

7:20 p.m., February 22. 83rd block of 15th Ave NW

Police responded to reports of a robbery at the Safeway gas station in Ballard on the evening of February 22. The victim, a clerk, said that at around 7:00 p.m., a white male entered the store, approached the register, and ordered the victim to open it. The victim said that he thought the suspect was joking at first, but then the suspect repeated his demand and the victim complied. The suspect took all of the cash from the register, estimated at around $400, and then ordered the victim to go into the back room and shut the door. The victim obeyed. He came back out front after three minutes and the suspect had gone, so he called 911.

The victim described the suspect as a white male, 6’0” with a slim build. He said the suspect had a hood over his face, so he would not be able to recognize the suspect if he saw him again. He said the suspect did not seem to be armed. Surveillance footage of the incident did not show the suspect’s face, but two sets of fingerprints were lifted at the scene.

9:20 a.m., February 22. 73rd block of Dibble Ave NW

A woman called police after a man tried to burglarize her house while she was inside. The victim said that someone she didn’t recognize knocked on the door, and because she was pregnant and home alone, she decided not to answer. She then heard the suspect walk across the porch to the French doors and rattle them in an attempt to open them. She ran downstairs, yelling that she was going to call the police. The suspect said, “Oh, I’m sorry,” and walked away. The victim watched the suspect until he left the area.

One of the responding officers searched the neighborhood for the suspect. He observed a man matching the suspect’s description running southbound on Division Ave NW. The officer ordered the suspect to stop, and the suspect complied. The victim was taken to the scene, where she positively identified the suspect as the would-be burglar.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the North Precinct. His backpack was examined and found to contain a substantial quantity of copper wire, as well as two cell phones. The suspect claimed the backpack was not his. Officers continued searching and found a boat key float, at which point the suspect began yelling at the officers that they couldn’t go through the backpack. Officers opened the boat key float and found four clear plastic bags that appeared to contain methamphetamine residue. The suspect admitted that he had used narcotics earlier that day and said that he was very clearheaded when he used them.

The suspect also admitted that he had charged his cell phone at an apartment complex on 8th Ave NW and NW 65th St. He said he had only wanted to charge his phone when he knocked on the victim’s door. The suspect had just cleared a felony warrant and had over 50 charges for crimes ranging from robbery to burglary to narcotics possession.

4:00 p.m., February 20. 85th and Greenwood NW

Police responded to reports of an attempted burglary at Razzi’s Pizza in Greenwood on the afternoon of February 20. The victim said he entered his office and found an unknown male sitting inside. The male was standing next to the rolls of change that the victim kept in his office. When the victim asked the suspect what he was doing in the office, the suspect said he was there to apply for a job.

The victim told police that he noticed a long screwdriver sticking out of the suspect’s pocket. He said that he locked the suspect in the office but ultimately let him go. He didn’t believe the suspect took anything, but he wasn’t sure. The suspect was last seen leaving the restaurant in a red truck driven by another male.
