Adam Evans is the Ballard then-freshman who ran/walked continuously for 24 hours during last year’s Relay for Life. Asked what he plans for an encore, team captain Adam Evans answers, “Not that.”

Although this will only be his second year participating in the Relay for Life of Northwest Seattle Evans has been participating with his family at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at Mt. Tahoma High since he was in grade school. His team sport at Ballard is Track and Cross-Country but in truth Evans has always loved to run.

Relay for Life of Northwest Seattle 2013 will return him to one of his home tracks; the June 1-2 event will take place on the Whitman Middle School field. Last year’s goal of 24-hour motion was very much a tribute to an aunt who had died earlier in the year. For 2013 Evans is enlisting fellow track teammates, and has set a personal goal of getting pledges of $2,000. His strategy will be to ask everyone that he meets.

“I’m guessing that everyone has been affected by cancer,” he said. This has been all too true for his family; he has had two aunts and two uncles affected, each with a different type of cancer.

Evans also plans to once again participate in the Mt. Tahoma Relay for Life that will be later in June. Such a dedicated youth participant is exactly what Committee Chair Marilyn Klepper would like to duplicate in more adults. Klepper has 24 teams signed up but would like to add five more, “There is still time to sign up a team as most teams do their fundraising during the month before the Relay.”

Klepper is very excited by an added fundraising feature that is open to everyone: a Salmon Dinner sponsored by the Ballard Masonic Lodge. The entire suggested donation of $20.00 a dinner will go to the relay.

In the meantime, lace up the running shoes, sign up for a team and start getting pledges. It’s not too late to catch up with Adam Evans.
