It was a roller coaster ride for the Evergreen High School football team.

At first the Wolverines stayed neck-and-neck with Lakeside of Seattle, then they fell behind by a 56-12 score early in the third quarter to bring on the running clock mercy rule.

Evergreen then scored two quick touchdowns to make it 56-26 by the end of the third quarter, before both teams settled in to go scoreless the rest of the way.

The Lions of Lakeside scored first in Friday's non-league affair at Highline Memorial.

Quarterback Adam Hinthorne connected with Mike Padden for a 34-yard touchdown pass play, then Trevor Peterson kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 with 5:04 to play in the first quarter.

Evergreen of White Center came right back to score at the 3:53 mark, when Rafael Bourne struck on a 42-yard touchdown run around the right side.

The Wolverines failed to catch up to the Lions, however, as the kick for the extra point missed to leave the score at 7-6.

Lakeside then continued the wild late first quarter scoring, with Hinthorne throwing to Padden again for a 23-yard touchdown. Peterson's PAT upped the lead to 14-6 with 2:19 to go in the quarter.

The Lions pounced again with 11:32 to play in the second quarter.

Cole Stephens found himself beyond everyone up the middle and received a pass from Hinthorne for a 75-yard touchdown play. Peterson was once again successful on the kick to make it 21-6.

Evergreen got back into the game briefly as Bourne ran for a 60-yard touchdown with 8:58 to go before halftime. But his sprint around the left side was followed by another missed PAT to leave the Wolverines trailing by a 21-12 score.

Lakeside then exploded for four straight touchdowns by halftime, with Peterson's four kicks making it 49-12.

Hinthorne scored the first on an 81-yard keeper at the 8:38 mark and Hinthorne threw to Stephens for a 21-yard left side score at 5:12 to go.

Nick Kaye continued the Lions' binge with a two-yard touchdown run at 2:57 and Jaydn Brown ran for a three-yard score with only five seconds left before halftime.

The running clock rule came into play with 7:30 to play in the third quarter as the Lions suddenly led by over the required 40 points in the second half.

Hinthorne hit Padden for a 28-yard touchdown pass and Peterson's extra point made it 56-12 for a 44-point difference.

The difference was short lived, but the clock kept running.

Ken Dang of the Wolverines threw to Gaige Early for a 13-yard touchdown pass, but the kick failed once again to keep the score at 56-18 at the 4:17 mark.

The Wolverines then got the last word in with seven seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Theo Mowatt ran for an 11-yard touchdown, then Dang connected with Early on a two-point conversion that brought the score to its final 56-26 margin.

Evergreen returns to Highline Memorial to play Hazen in a 5 p.m. Seamount League game this coming Friday ahead of an 8 p.m. game between Mount Rainier and Kentlake.
