Heidi Herr and Corina Luckenbach are the owners of Admiral Bird, now joined with Flower Lab at the corner of Admiral Way S.W. and California Ave. S.W. The new hybrid shop offers espresso, food (wine and beer soon) and the flowers, arrangements and gifts.
What do you get when you combine an established, innovative flower shop and an established neighborhood favorite espresso shop? The answer is Admiral Bird, the idea of Flower Lab owner Wendy Damoth, that combines the flavors and formula developed by Heidi Herr from Bird on a Wire that has flourished on Henderson Street S.W. just off 35th S.W. for eleven years with the beauty and cleverness of the products from Flower Lab.
The new hybrid is meant to truly be complementary in that the coffee/food half (and soon beer and wine) will bring people in more frequently, and the flower shop will provide reasons to linger and shop.
The buildout of the shop was done by Josh Powers.
The Bird side is run by both Herr and Corina Luckenbach. They will carry many of the same foods and coffees as their other location with a focus on local suppliers.
Luckenbach said they will carry, "Shipwreck Honey, Honest Biscuits, and we make all of our own flavors like caramel and chocolate. We'll be using Gretchen's Grains for our salads, like organic quinoa."
They will offer homemade soup, sandwiches, salads to go and pastries.
For now they have room for around 30 people inside comfortably (more if they are standing) and plan to have outdoor seating for the summer.
"What I really like about this," said Herr, "is that will have a little European bar atmosphere here. I love this neighborhood and it's nice that we get to have this little community space."
In fact you can book it for small meetings (they already some reserved) or special events. Stop in to ask them about it.
They will be open 8am to 4pm (until the liquor license is approved and then they will go to 8am to 8pm). The Flower Lab will be open 8:30am to 5pm.
