Named for the amusement park the once stood at the tip of Alki, the Luna Park Café will celebrate its 25th year in business this March. Luna Park Café opened on March 18th, 1989, and was an instant hit, selling out of most everything on the menu before noon. Since then, it has earned its reputation on great burgers, hand dipped milkshakes, and a hearty menu of American comfort food.
The cafe is the quintessential, yet quirky “50’s Diner”, featuring an original Seeburg Jukebox with a great selection of music available from any table-side wall box. You can sit at the soda fountain bar, or choose one of the many booths to enjoy your meal. Wherever you look, there is something from the past that will catch your eye. There are also several vintage coin op amusement devices including the venerable Batmobile that has kept kids entertained for generations. Owned and operated since the beginning by West Seattle resident John Bennett, Luna was conceived out of a desire for a simpler time. “I built the café so my kids would have a cool place to ride their bikes to after school and have a soda. Later it was a great place for all of them to work during summer vacation.”
The colorful wait staff has always been part of the fun. If you’re lucky, you may get served by Sweet Pea, a sassy little number who has been serving regulars since nearly opening day. She says “The three reasons people keep coming back is the food, the fun, and the great staff.”
To celebrate year 25, the cafe is introducing some new “classic” items starting March 18th including Chicken and Waffles, The Amusement Park Sundae (which starts out with 8 scoops of ice cream!), and an updated, delicious version of what your grandpa might call “S.O.S”. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, the Luna Park Café serves up some of the best food and fun in Seattle. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Stay tuned for more news on Luna's celebration this month.
Luna Park Café is located at 2918 Avalon Way in West Seattle in the shadow of the West Seattle Bridge. It is open daily from 7:00am to 10:00pm. Happy hour from 3:00pm until 6:00pm.
