After a tough 6-5 loss to South Highline National in the game played a day earlier, West Seattle bounced back with a mighty big bounce, beating Southwest, 47-4, at the Pac West Fields Sunday.
"We play Highline again," said Mark Douglas, West Seattle's manager. "We got our work cut out for us."
The game against Southwest was just a lot of scoring throughout for West Seattle, including three inside-the-park home runs. Two of those round-trippers were made by Nathan Pelley.
"I went 6-for-8 today with two home runs," he said, noting they were balls that got to the fence and that he circled the bases around before the opposing team's outfielder could track it down and get it to the cut-off man in shallow center field and to home plate.
What was the difference in this game and the one against National with not a lot of hitting? Only four hits in that one, actually.
"We lost by one run and just couldn't get our bats to go," said Pelley. "Today we got our bats going and our defense did a really good job."
Just to recap the start to the game for the scoring and leave it at that, in a game that Southwest was just overmatched and not really ready for, including having a player show up a half-hour late for the game and making it so the Southwest team did not have enough players to play the game until that player arrived.
But this game was over very quickly as West Seattle led by double digits after the first inning and never looked back. Included in the fray of scoring of the top of the first inning for West Seattle was Pelley leading off with a single and Hunter Hammington drawing a walk. Then, Nathan Villegas singled and Joe Pare and Chris Frost and Henry Ruf and Will Douglas and Eli Dever all contributed with hitting the ball for singles, doubles, RBIs and this game was over.
Just to put things in perspective of how much offense West Seattle did put up against Southwest, Villegas said, "We went through our batting order at least seven times."
West Seattle plays against South Highine National on Monday at 6 p.m. in the championship game, needing to win twice (if necessary game Tuesday 6 p.m.) in order to advance to the All Stars state tournament for Intermediate age Little League ballplayers age 11-13.
