Seattle Christian High school embraced the attitude of aggression well to post a 5-0 home girls soccer victory against Cascade Christian High School at Valley Ridge Park Field No. 1 in SeaTac on Thurs., Oct. 1.
"We're getting goals from lost of different people," said Warrior head coach Melissa Dunckley. "They have a good goalie and it took time to figure out how to finish. We had to work hard for our goals. The challenge makes us better."
From the opening moments, Seattle Christian swept the field with ongoing offensive assaults that forced Cascade Christian goalkeeper Kierstin Patefield and the Cougar defense to stave off scoring threats .
For nearly 20 minutes, the teams stayed scoreless despite constant bombardment from Warrior strikers.
In addition to the CC defense, the SC offense fired off more than half a dozen shots from 20-25 yards out after clearing defenders instead of dribbling through open spaces closer to the goal. Several shots were close to going in with one try hitting the left post and another denting the cross bar.
In the 18th minute of play, Megan Nielsen took a feed from Jacey Childress to send the Warriors ahead 1-0.
"We've gotten better technically and are better at working together," observed Nielsen about her team's continuing progress.
Seattle Christian kept the hits going with Makenzie May passing to Payton Hibbard for goal No. 2 in the 25th minute.
Pressure play continued as Tanna Brinkman led the way in delivering passes up the field as a total body of Warriors winged forward..
The matriculating up the field perseverance paid off just before halftime. Morgan Gaston took a ball in the air from Isabella Responte and headed the ball nicely into the net in the 32nd minute.
Following the halftime break, it took a very brief interlude before Makenzie May took advantage of a centering pass from Brinkman to notch the fourth Seattle Christian goal at the 42nd minute.
By this time, Warrior keeper Erin Swain was in the process of exchanging her regalia for a forward garb while Childress took over the second half keeper duties to keep the Cougars scoreless.
In the 55th minute, May delivered one more goal after Brinkman bounced a shot of the keeper.
"Thanks to Tanna, I was able to take the rebound and knock it in," May said.
Cascade Christian was able to threaten the Seattle Christian goal a few times, but the Warrior reserves did everything but score the rest of the way against its hard fighting opposition.
"Seattle Christian has a great team and great coaching," said Cascade Christian head coach Lisa Peterson who was a former long time soccer mentor at SC before moving over to CCHS. "I'm really pleased with our effort. It was a great learning experience. Seattle Christian is fundamentally strong and the girls are nice. We're working on our combination play. It's always nice to play them."
The Warriors improved their overall record to 6-2 and 3-0 Nisqually 1A League. For the Cougars, their record stands at 1-4-1 and 0-3 respectively.
