Good natured fun dominated the day as Evergreen edged Tyee, 72-71, in a staff/alumni fundraiser basketball game Friday.
Such was the case even after the show in the Evergreen gymnasium ended.
"We got the win," quipped Evergreen athletic director Chris Dubois while cleaning up along with Tyee athletic director John Yellam. "A dominating win."
"One point on a ghost technical, right," responded Yellam.
The "ghost" technical foul Yellam was referring to came with 1:16 to play in the game and turned a 69-68 Evergreen lead to 70-68 on 1-for-2 free throw shooting.
Evergreen added two more free throws in the waning seconds of the game, then Tyee closed the final score to 72-71 on a three-point shot with one second left.
To the winner went a silver trophy to keep for a year until the next meeting.
But this game was not so much about the game or the trophy as it was about raising funds for the athletic programs at both schools.
"Tyee and Evergreen go 50-50 to the athletic funds to help our athletes," said Yellam. "It's kind of a fun deal. The basketball coaches came to us and asked about a fundraiser."
"It was a fun night," said Evergreen's Dubois. "It's good for both programs. It's a good way to kick off the basketball season, and both schools made a little bit of money."
This was the second annual game, with next year's slated to take place at Tyee -- as did the first one last year.
"We'll rotate between the two schools," said Yellam.
"Hopefully we'll keep building it each year," said Dubois.
Funds came from admission, and from a raffle that featured a football autographed by Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
Both schools drew a good number of both men and women staff members and graduates to play.
Staff members on the Tyee team included head boys basketball coach Brandon Horstman, head girls basketball coach Amanda Segerman, volunteer boys basketball coach Billy Thomas, physical education teachers Rachelle Camacho and AJ Mathews, ILC teacher Brent Peterson and math teacher AJ Campanelli.
Tyee graduates on the team were Breanna Abraham (2014), Darius Terry (2013), Nick Hawthorne (2011), Jaylen Plunkett (2014), Jacob Alerte (2013) and Anthony Summers (2013).
The Evergreen team included coach Tony White, coach Otis Pimpleton, coach and 2003 graduate Terry Chhim, coach and 2010 graduate Stuart Jennings, staff member Reese Murray, 2010 graduate Jobri Muhammad, 2011 graduate Mo Samdu, 2007 graduate Keilah Fanene, 2005 graduate Josiah Fanene, 2003 graduate Dave Massington and 2001 graduate J.R. Stephens.
At least one woman per team was on the floor the entire time, and other rules included a 10-minute clock that continuosly ran except for free throws. No jersey numbers were worn.
