LAS VEGAS-- A team of West Seattle and Burien-area players captured first place at an AAU basketball tournament played in Las Vegas, Nev. this past week.
The Seattle Pride age 16 and under squad swept all four games in the tournament by double digits -- over teams from Texas, Hawaii, Canada and California.
The final was Thursday.
Two Seattle Lutheran players (Josh Meyer and Roberto Duenaz) are on the team along with two from West Seattle (Nate Pryor and Tyler Lenzie), two from Shorewood Christian (JJ Young and Jovie Fevealaki), two from Kennedy (Matthew Sassanoff and Emilio Mancol) and one each from Chief Sealth (Evan Moe), O'Dea (Shea Carstens) and Seattle Prep (Jaxon Woodward).
Seattle stayed in Las Vegas through the weekend for another tournament -- the Big Foot Hoops Las Vegas Classic.
The tournament included 160 top 16 and under teams from around the nation and the world and the Reign made it all the way to the "Sweet 16" round of the overall tournament after winning its pool.
Seattle opened pool play with an 86-56 victory over the Houston Lynx from Texas before beating the Seaside's Finest team from California, 69-24, and the UBC Black team from Utah, 63-59. The Pride then beat Northwest Ohio Basketball in the round of 32 before losing to Team Milo.
