Burglars put in a lot of work, but came up empty-handed on July 20. Sometime during the night, unknown suspects killed the power to a business on the 9400 block of 17th Ave S.W. before attempting to break in through the back door (it was reinforced with 2x4 metal brackets). Unable to get in that way, they used a ladder to get onto the roof, tore a hole in the roof with an unknown tool, punched holes through the ceiling tile and lowered themselves down using a hose tied to a rafter beam. The suspects stole the cash register and exited the same way they came in. Police found the register in a lot near the building, pried open. When the business owner arrived he told police there was no money in the cash register and nothing else was missing.
Around 1:30 p.m. on July 22 a man living on 44th Ave S.W. heard a loud bang at his front door. Stepping into the hallway to take a look he saw the backside of a man trying to quietly close the door he had just shattered with a kick behind him. The victim yelled and the suspect fled. Police found a possible suspect in a nearby alley. The suspect had two prior burglary arrests in the last year and was wearing a large black leather jacket and gloves … the weather at that time was over 70 degrees and sunny. Police brought the suspect back to the victim’s house for identification and the victim said he could not positively identify the man as he had only briefly seen his backside. After coming up empty on a witness check with neighbors, police let the potential suspect go.
A woman living on 31st Ave S.W. left several windows open on July 24 so her house, currently on the market, would not smell stuffy when the realtor arrived to show the it later in the day. When the woman returned shortly after midnight her back and front doors were wide open. Investigating her house, the victim found very little disturbance and nothing clearly missing until she noticed a file sitting open on top of the file cabinet. The file contained information on two domestic violence criminal assault cases she had filed against (a redacted name). Searching further, she discovered medical records from the file cabinet and her toothbrush were missing. The realtor was certain she had locked the doors before leaving and the victim told police the only person of interest that made sense under the circumstances was the person she had filed domestic violence charges against. She believed the file was left on display “was a message to her.”
