A worthwhile use of city vehicles
A real estate agent was walking down the 5000 block of California Ave with a cell phone in one hand and two briefcases in the other around 11 a.m. on Sept 21 when a man walked up and punched her forcefully in the side of the head. As she fell to the ground, the aggressor tried to grab her phone but missed and ran away. Seattle Department of Transportation workers saw the robbery attempt unfold, jumped into their work truck and followed the suspect. They caught him on 46th Ave SW and detained him until police arrived. While shaken up, the victim declined medical attention. While being arrested, the suspect told police was hearing voices and “acting out” to get the police attention. He admitted to punching the woman and said his “hands just did it … as a result of all his rage and pent up anger.”
Caught in the act
A woman was in the upstairs bedroom of her 45th Ave S.W. home with her four-year-old son when she heard footsteps coming up the stairs (it was 10:30 a.m.). She didn’t see anyone, but the unknown intruder suddenly shut her bedroom door. The woman called 911, waited about a minute listening intently and decided to go check it out. As she walked towards the front door she could see muddy footprints tracked through the house and as she stepped outside two males were walking towards her. She yelled out, asking what they were doing. “Which way is the freeway?” the men asked repeatedly. The woman confronted them and asked if they were in her house. “Why would you say that?” one responded. “We don’t do that kind of thing.” The suspects then took off at a sprint, hopping into a dark colored Ford Taurus that fled southbound. The victim was able to recover her laptop from the lawn and said the burglars made it away with her purse and wallet.
Shop(lifting) for golf balls
A young man was perusing the sporting goods aisle of a store in Westwood Village on Barton on Sept 27. when he caught store security’s eye through surveillance cameras. A security guard watched him grab two boxes of golf balls (valued at $35 each) and walk to the men’s section where he slipped them into his backpack. The suspect was confronted by security as he attempted to leave the store, resulting in a “standing wrestling match.” The suspect was able to break free and fled, leaving his backpack behind. Inside the backpack, along with the golf balls, was a 2010 graduation worksheet from a Seattle school with a student’s name written on it. The worksheet was given to a SPD detective to track the studious thief down (unless, of course, the backpack was stolen as well).
