5 plus 1 murals are planned
Ufkes said the Chamber has been working to coordinate the creation of "5 plus 1" murals to be painted during the May 19 Spring Clean event in White Center. The 5 primary murals are planned for walls on buildings at 17th and Roxbury, on the wall of the former Atlas Electric at 9811 17th s.w., two more on 107th s.w. that will be repainted, and one on the wall at Be's Crawfish on 16th s.w.
More significant and to be completed at a later date will be a mural on the north wall of Saar's Super Saver (the former Albertsons store) on 16th s.w. Teams of students from various classes on the Evergreen Campus have come up with ideas for a mural there. Those ideas are being consolidated by the Art Club into one large concept, into which a food theme will be integrated. Ufkes said the final design must be approved by owner Greg Saar and then will be painted at the eight foot level to preclude graffiti and/or tagging.
Rick Jump of the White Center Food Bank said he has spoken to the owner of the sewing machine shop on 16th s.w. next to KFC and A&W and relayed that he was interested in having a mural done on that otherwise plain brown wall.
