Baby monitor saves the night
Around 3 a.m. on May 4 a mother on the 5200 block of 21st Ave S.W. woke up to a strange sound emitting from the baby monitor in the room where her two children slept. She went to check on the kids and realized their bedroom window was shaking, as if someone was trying to jar it open. She gathered her kids and her husband called 911. After a moment of silence they heard someone trying to open the back door, which was secured with a deadbolt. They saw a male suspect at that point and watched him walk back to the window for another failed attempt before sauntering across the street to attempt breaking into a neighbor’s truck. Two Southwest Precinct officers arrived and arrested the18-year-old male for attempted burglary.
It must be your dad
A mother, her son and their dog were sitting in the backyard of their Hillcrest Ave S.W. home on the evening of May 5 enjoying the weather. Her son walked into the house briefly and heard someone walking around upstairs. He told mom about the noise and she said it was likely his father arriving home from work. Moments later, her husband called and said he was just leaving Whidbey Island on his way home. She called 911 and the suspect was gone by the time police arrived (her front door was unlocked). The woman said several neighbors on Hillcrest had been burglarized over the past few weeks.
If only her ride had arrived
It was 8:40 p.m. on May 3 when a young woman got off the bus on the 3200 block of California Ave S.W. after work. Her boyfriend was supposed to be there to pick her up but was nowhere in sight, so she decided to walk to the stop at the corner of California and S.W. Hanford St. As she waited on her ride she heard a group of people behind her speaking Spanish. She looked and saw two Hispanic males and three Hispanic females, all in their teens. Suddenly someone from the group grabbed her from behind, put a hand over her mouth and dragged her into an alley west of California. Her head was slammed into a tree and she fell to the ground. All five suspects converged on the victim and started kicking and punching her. During the assault, the young victim was able to crawl to her phone and press “talk” twice to call the last number attempted (her boyfriend). Before she heard a voice on the other end, one of her assailants grabbed the phone and hung it up. After rooting through her backpack and stealing a watch, the suspects fled. The victim suffered a knot on her head, scratches to her face and pain near her left side ribcage. She was transported to Highline Hospital.
Padlock attack
On May 6 just before 5 p.m., a man stepped out of a tavern on the 4700 block of California Ave S.W. to have a cigarette. Another man described as a white male in his mid 20s, 6-1, 160 pounds with “dirty blond dreadlocks, black jacket with white stripes on the sleeves, dungy jeans and dirty white tennis shoes” walked up to the smoker and yelled, “You threatened my friend,” and started swinging a chain with a pad lock on the end. The victim was struck on the top of the head, resulting in a gash, before he was able to escape back into the bar. Police believe they know who the suspect is and have a witness to corroborate the attack.
