Landlord turned burglar
A tenant/landlord dispute going on for weeks culminated in the alleged theft of several items from the tenant. It all started around August 1 when the landlord started threatening her tenant on the 9700 block of 37th Ave S.W. with eviction and started entering his place unannounced. Police responded at that time and talked with the landlord about the laws, including the facts that she can’t change the locks or evict without going through the courts, and she can’t enter the premise without written notice well in advance. On Aug. 5, someone (allegedly the landlord) made a door-sized hole in the wall of the apartment and the male tenant decided it was time to move out on his own accord and started packing up (his rent was paid until the 11th). On Aug. 6, the tenant arrived home from work and found all of his belongings in the driveway. Several items were missing including his mail, pots and pans and bottles of liquor. Later that day, the landlord called 911 and said she wanted to talk with police. She admitted to moving the victim’s items out of the room, which constituted illegal entry and burglary and led to her arrest. She said the pots and pans were hers, the liquor was taken because she is trying to run a “clean and sober house,” and she denied taking any mail.
$8400 in jewelry stolen
A burglary victim came home from work on Aug. 1 to find her home completely stripped of any and all jewelry. The unknown suspect broke in by shattering a side window and filled a stolen pillow case with the valuable items before fleeing the home on the 8600 block of 14th Ave S.W. Necklaces, watches, earrings, bracelets and rings were taken – 33 items in total – including a Tiffany & Co. bracelet valued at $1500 and a 14K gold ring with a clear sapphire stone valued at $2000. Fingerprints were found around the window frame and placed into evidence, but there were no witnesses to the crime.
Man beaten and robbed on California
On August 3, around 9 p.m., a male hanging out with friends at Lincoln Park left the group to grab a bite to eat. Walking along the sidewalk near California Ave S.W. and S.W. Edmonds St., the victim was approached by four males from behind. One of the men said “Give me all your stuff,” and, without hesitation, punched the victim in the left eye. He fell to the ground and “turtled up” to protect himself while the four suspects kicked and punched him on the ground, eventually knocking him unconscious. When he came to all of his clothing except for his boxers were missing in addition to a green North Face backpack, his iPhone and wallet. He made his way back to Lincoln Park and found a friend who said that same group robbed him two days earlier. The next morning, the victim’s mother drove him to Swedish on First Hill where he was treated for a concussion, broken front tooth, swollen left eye and many other scrapes and bruises. The first suspect to hit the victim was described as a “dark skinned black male, 18 years old, large and puffy 6” afro, about 5 ft, 7 inches, and 230 pounds.” A second was described as a “light skinned Samoan male, 18 years old, with short hair, and approx. 5 foot 7 inches, 265 pounds.” The other two were described as black males in their late teens/early twenties. Police continue to investigate.
