“It was a dark and stormy night at the spooky house…”
You’ve heard those stories, especially around Halloween. It’s cold, the rain is falling, and a large scary beast comes out of the chilling rain determined to rip out your heart and eat it right in front of you.
It was dark, the rain was falling, and for the Seahawks that beast was the Seattle Prep Panthers. The Panthers claws were sharp, its teeth were large, and it came for blood. Memorial Stadium was a house of horrors.
Alright, enough of the macabre. The Seahawks just plain got man handled. They turned the ball over on their first possession of the game and the Panthers took immediate advantage of that tasty gift and promptly put seven points on the board. The Seahawks quickly gave the ball back to Seattle Prep which just as quickly gobbled up seven more points.
The only miscue by Seattle Prep in the half was a fumbled fourth down punt attempt in the first quarter that got loose in the end zone for a safety. The quarter ended with the Panthers in control 16-2.
The brightest moment of the night for the Seahawks came as the second quarter began when Sealth crossed mid field and Seahawk QB Maxwell Sarver launched a forty yard bomb into the endzone that looked like it was, at the very least, going to be broken up. The ball bounced of the two Prep defenders hands and into the waiting arms of wide receiver Trey Brown for Sealth's only touchdown of the game. Missing the extra point Sealth trailed 16-8.
Any feeling of relief was quickly eschewed as Prep scored on their next five possessions. Mostly because of Sealth turnovers, and as the half ended, the house of horrors loomed in the form of a first half 51-8 debacle.
The second half was as boring as the day after Halloween. The "mercy rule" was invoked and the half was run without the clock stopping to shorten the game.
Prep didn’t do much, they didn’t have to. The Panthers were fat and sassy. Their bellies were full of all the treats that the Seahawks fed them. Spooky Memorial Stadium. All that was missing was the lightning.
51-8, that’s a scary Halloween story.
