In Seamount League play the Evergreen Wolverines laid a beat down on the Highline Pirates Wednesday Dec. 19.

Both teams started slowly and at the end of the first period Evergreen held a slim 12-11 lead. This trend continued through the rest of the first half. Play was a little sloppy on both sides with each team deep in the penalty situation and when the half ended Evergreen had ten fouls to Highlines nine. The Wolverines did extend their lead to six and the half ended with Evergreen on top 29-23.

As the halftime break came to an end, the Pirates had been on the court warming up for several minutes, there was no sign of Evergreen. Coach Tony White kept his team in the locker room till the last moment. Whatever he was telling his team made an immediate impact.

The Wolverines came out biting and clawing in the third period. Evergreens Center, the noticeably taller 6’ 5” Alex Campbell, began to exert his height and became the power in the post, blocking shots and was unstoppable on offense. Alex would finish the night with a team and game high 31 points.

The Pirates fought hard but were flummoxed by scrappy defensive play by the Wolverines. Highlines Guard Erik Anderson was the only Pirate player Evergreen could not find an answer to defend against. Anderson was a man on fire; shooting from every location on the court he finished with a team high 26 points for Highline.

When the third period came to a close the Wolverines were pulling away with a 13 point lead. In the fourth Campbell and Point Guards Chris Sainz (15 points) and Brandon Valencia (10 points) hit shots at will.
With five minutes left in the contest and a fifteen point lead Evergreen coach Tony White began pulling his starters. The bench players for Evergreen had success on the hardwood as well and extended the lead. All Wolverine players except one scored during the game.

The Pirates simply had no answer to Evergreens game plan and at the buzzer the scoreboard showed an impressive 77-58 win for Evergreen.

Evergreen coach Tony White had this to say after the game- “It was a good game but they’re (his team) not playing as well as they should be playing”, when asked about the number of penalties he responded “they’re not playing smart on defense”.

This was the last game of the year for Evergreen. They return to play on January 3rd when they travel to Bremerton to take Olympic High School.
