Sealth beat Blanchet Bishop on Friday night, Jan, 11 despite being without two starters.
Two starters out for the game could have proved disastrous for the Seahawks but a second half defensive surge allowed Sealth’s fast break to take over the game.
With Bronte’ Corbray and Abdirahman Diriye out for the game the coaches were concerned whether this team could step it up against the Blanchet Braves.
Corbray wasn’t available because of an academic violation. It was unknown why Diriye was not on the court.
Replacements Brady Crane and LJ Burns provided the stability the Seahawks needed for the team to gel in the second period after being down 9-8 after one.
There was a scary moment midway through the first period when standout starter Aaron Knox collided with a Blanchet player while going after the ball.
Knox rolled on the court for several minutes in obvious pain holding his left knee before limping off the hardwood under his own power. Leeandre Dickerson replaced Knox.
The incident showed how this team can rally in the face of diversity. Being down 9-8 at the end of one the Seahawks kicked off the rust leftover from last week and surged to close out the half with a six point lead 24-18.
Aaron Knox returned in the second half with a vengeance. Scoring no points before going out in the first, Knox was a man on fire, getting to the hoop for a team high 14 second half points.
Sealth stayed in control for the rest of the game using a stingy defense to spring their fast break offense on a Blanchet team that had no answers.
Chief Sealth cruises to a 52-44 win over the Braves of Blanchet.
Both Bronte’ Corbray and Abdirahman Diriye are expected to return to the lineup next week when Sealth travels to Franklin HS to take on the Quakers Tuesday January 15th. Game time is 7:30pm.
