Same house targeted by gunfire three times
In less than one month, the same house on the 2000 block of S.W. Cloverdale St. has been shot at on three separate occasions by unknown suspects. The latest shooting occurred on April 2 around 10:15 p.m. when neighbors reported seeing a gold Ford Taurus circle around the block, and then park near the home. Two men stepped out, pulled out handguns, and fired at the home. No one has been injured and the victims told detectives they have no idea why they are being targeted.
Predictive policing at work
In the late evening of April 1, a Southwest Precinct officer was patrolling the Admiral district as part of his “passive predictive patrol circle” (SPD recently started using historical crime statistics and data-crunching technology to figure out where they should patrol, essentially trying to predict where crime will occur). He was approached by a woman walking her dogs who said a disturbance was happening in an alleyway nearby. The officer drove to the rear of an establishment where a large group of people pointed in the northbound direction where a man in a grey Jeep Cherokee has supposedly just brandished a handgun before fleeing. A man and woman in the group, who are now dating, claimed the suspect was the former boyfriend of the woman and father of her three children. The woman reported she had been receiving constant text threats from her former partner, which lead to the Admiral-area confrontation where the new boyfriend claimed he was able to wrestle the gun from the aggressor, but gave it back to him before he left.
Burglary attempt caught from two angles
Late last month a woman was walking near the High Point Library when she saw two young men working together to try to get into a home through a window. She called 911 and suddenly the males jumped down from the window and scattered. It turned out the window they were attempting to use for entry was the bedroom window of a resident who was home sick for the day and in bed. The victim saw the male’s face appear in his window, stood up and out of bed, and the suspects fled. The woman who called 911 from the street told police she could positively identify the suspects and a male fitting her description was spotted and detained by police. The woman positively identified him as one of the attempted-burglars and he was taken to the Southwest Precinct. Once there, an SPD Detective decided to let the suspect go because the witness was only able to see his backside during the alleged crime and refused to get any closer to the suspect than 50 yards for positive identification.
