The afternoon was hot and cold for the division leading West Seattle Wildcats.

The normally hot pitching the Wildcats field went north to Alaska and took the bats and defense with them. Then a warm front moved onto Hiawatha Field. With the temperature rocketing to 87 degrees one had a hard time differentiating between mother nature and the heat wave that blew in from Bainbridge Island.

Scoring two runs in the second, four runs in the third, three in the fourth, and four more in the fifth the Spartans of Bainbridge Island blistered Wildcat pitching on an afternoon that was equally as hot. West Seattle starting pitcher Sam Hellinger lasted only three and a third giving up five runs. His relief could do no better. Three other Wildcat pitchers took the mound and gave up a total of eight runs and the Wildcats go down 13-0 in their first post season outing. The defense fared no better committing a bucket full of errors in an uncharacteristic performance.

At the center of the island heat wave was Spartan first baseman Tino Peleti. Peleti blasted two, two run homers accounting for thirty percent of Bainbridge’s offensive output. Both shots went over the head of the scrambling Tim Adams in deep right field. Peleti’s second shot in the fourth inning went into the fir trees north of the community building, a distance of approximately 400 feet.

All Adams could do was stand there and watch the ball disappear into the trees. Spartan right fielder Brett Green blasted a solo home run in the fifth inning that landed in nearly the same location in right field as Peleti’s, the only thing that right fielder Tim Adams could do, with arms at his side, was watch the ball vanish across the warning track.

Coach Velko Vitalich commented after the game; “They (Bainbridge) had a good game. We handled them earlier in the season”. That outcome was a 7-2 Wildcat win.

This by no means is the end of West Seattle’s post season. The Wildcats will play the Ingraham Rams in the game seven bracket on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
In other Westside baseball news the Chief Sealth Seahawks lost a close one to Eastside Catholic 4-3 and will face the Nathan Hale Raiders on Thursday in the game eight bracket at 8:00 pm
