Jumped near 16th and Barton
Just before midnight on May 24 a young man was walking near S.W. Barton St. and 16th Ave. S.W. to his girlfriend’s apartment nearby when an older model white sedan pulled up and two young men jumped out, one armed with a bat. The young man tried to run but was struck in the back with the bat, slowing him. The bat-wielding suspect then pushed the victim to the ground and said he did not want to hurt him (a bit too late), but only wanted his stuff. The second suspect, standing close by, asked if he should pull out his gun. The victim told his attackers to take his laptop and book bag, which they did. Police responded but were unable to find their suspects, described as a black male, late teens to early twenties, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and a red bandana over his face and a black male, same age, wearing a black hood sweatshirt and large “Ray Ban” style sunglasses.
BBQ theft cut short by a gun
On May 23rd, around noon, a man living in an apartment complex on the 9000 block of 16th Ave. S.W. saw a man stealing attempting to steal his BBQ grill from the alley below. The suspect, described as a white male in his 50’s with a shaved head, blue t-shirt and blue jeans, had backed a beat up blue Ford F150 and was loading it into the truckbed. The victim noticed the man and truck as someone who was suspected in stealing his neighbor’s grill across the alley recently. The victim confronted the suspect and the suspect used a “foreign language” to command a German Shepherd in the truck to attack. The victim said he pulled out his .357 magnum revolver pistol and drew down on the dog. The suspect quickly restrained his attack dog, jumped into the truck and peeled out, speeding off northbound at an estimated 50 miles per hour. The victim, whose grill was now safe, gave police the license plate number of the suspect. The police report states the suspect description matches the owner of the truck, who is listed as working in the vehicle recycling industry.
Instant identity theft
A couple living on the 4400 block of 41st Ave. S.W. called police on May 25 to report cell phones, an iPod and a wallet had just been stolen from their home. One of the victims told police she had heard her neighbor talking with a supposed door-to-door salesperson shortly before she heard a knock at her door. Dirty from doing yard work, she and her husband decided not to answer the door. Only a handful of minutes later, the husband went downstairs and realized someone had broken into a back door and stolen the above mentioned items. They called immediately to cancel the credit cards and were told they had already been used several times at convenience stores up and down California Ave. S.W. The responding officer, armed with the digital footprint, started checking surveillance tapes at the stores and was able to identify a black female wearing a dark gray fur-lined hooded jacket who was trying to by cartons of cigarettes and prepaid gift cards. Police followed the suspect’s path with the aid of iPod tracking software, but were unable to find her.
