The Seafair Pirates invaded Alki Beach as the annual kick off of Seafair (and for many...summer) took place on July 6. Cannon booms preceded their watery landing and they came ashore, met by a giant crowd. The low tide meant many people came out into the water to greet them making for a busier than usual beachfront.
The Seafair Pirates invaded Alki Beach on July 6 in the annual event that kicks off Seafair in Seattle. The pirates hit the beach right on schedule about 11:40 am and quickly moved ashore, handing out stickers, growling and posing for photos with anyone (especially girls) that would stand still long enough.
It was massive crowd, estimated in the thousands, with the onshore entertainment and festivities that started earlier in the day. Pole vaulting was the event of the day with both male and female competitors taking part.
Once the pirates got to the music stage they were greeted by Seafair royalty as well as Hi-Yu royalty and in a ceremony we've seen before, were given the key to the city by famous hydroplane racer (now commentator) Chip Hanauer. He in turn was
'Knighted' by Captain Kidd.
After a few pirate songs they were off, their brief invasion of the beach lasting not much more than 30 minutes.
