Robbed and texted
On Oct. 7 a young man was waiting for a bus on the 2600 block of S.W. Barton St. around 4 p.m. when a group of 4 young Hispanic males came up and began punching him. The victim was caught completely unaware since he was looking down at his phone when the first punch landed above his right eyebrow. The group of suspects all began punching and kicking the victim as he attempted to fight back.
Eventually the fighting ended when a passerby began yelling at the group to stop. The suspects reached down and stole the victim’s black LG phone and yellow and black backpack before running off. The victim walked to a nearby relative’s house to clean up before heading back to his own home and his waiting parents.
When the victim arrived home his mother showed him a text message she had received shortly after the robbery from his phone that read “I’m gay, you know that”, another cruel act by the suspects to this victim. The victim informed police that he had gone to high school for a time with one of the suspects, a 16 year old Hispanic male with a lip ring, but hadn’t seen him in a long time.
The parents of the victim prompted him to call police hours after the incident. The victim declined medical attention for the cuts and bruises to his face from the assault. A dentist appointment was set up the next day to examine a tooth that felt loose after the assault. The suspects remain at large.
Attempt to join party goes wrong
Around 9 p.m. on Oct. 7 a man walking through Solstice Park near the 4400 block of S.W. Fontanelle St. was brutally denied from joining a “party” that was going on in the park. The victim saw a group of 10 young people, described as being in their late teens or early 20’s wearing “kid clothes”, hanging out and decided to attempt to join in their fun.
A young male from the group approached the victim and asked for a cigarette. When the victim informed this suspect that he didn’t smoke the suspect began yelling at him and verbally abusing him. In a flash the victim was struck in the head and eventually was being pummeled from all directions by members of the young group.
While the victim was on the ground a suspect reached into his pockets and pulled out his wallet and phone. While examining the phone the suspect realized it required a security code. Enraged, the suspect demanded the victim give him the code or else he would kill him. The victim refused and told the suspect to “go ahead”. The suspects took the phone and wallet and headed out of the park leaving the victim on the ground.
When police made contact with the victim the bruises and swelling to the victim’s face were becoming more pronounced. The victim declined medical attention and told police he believed his keys had been stolen as well. Police told the victim to cancel all credit and debit cards and to have his locks changed. The suspects remain at large.
