Friends of Christy Phu, who was shot to death Sunday night, gathered for a candlelight vigil at Chief Sealth High School where she was a freshman student. The suspect in the case, her uncle, Si Phu has been arrested and is in custody in King County Jail.
Friends, family and teachers gathered to honor and remember 14 year old Christy Phu with a candlelight vigil at Chief Sealth High School on Wednesday evening, Dec. 9. Phu was shot to death, allegedly by her uncle Si Phu following an argument over a pair of shoes. He has been arrested and is being held in King County Jail.
Banners, many with messages to Christy were on the walls outside the school as a group of seven friends organized the event and remembered their friend.
She was recalled as a funny, loud, and faithful friend. "Most of us here were pretty close. She was always super positive. She never wanted to waste time and always wanted to take the time to do something good.. She always had a really nice smile on her face. Even when she wasn't happy she would try to stay up," several of her friends said. They've all done grief counseling over the matter.
Six of her friends spoke. Kayla, Janeth, Jolia, Kimberly, Solida, and Kamal, before Janeth sang "Lay me down" and two of her teachers spoke highly of her spirit and intelligence.
The victim’s family, who live in Seattle’s Columbia City neighborhood, is heartbroken now that Christy is gone.
“She’s just a young kid,” said her other, uncle Sam Phu, who is also Si’s older brother. “She don’t have a problem with anybody.”
The family said it was an argument over Michael Jordan shoes that set him off. Sam Phu said Si Phu demanded the shoes from his niece so he could sell them, but she refused.
“She didn’t want to give him the shoes, and then he shot her,” said Sam Phu. “It’s just him. He’s an animal- no heart, no love for the people.”
Si Phu is no stranger to the law. Earlier this year, court documents show, Snohomish County prosecutors charged him with cyberstalking-domestic violence. Investigators said he sent threatening text messages to an ex-girlfriend after a breakup.
Probable cause documents filed with the prosecutor's office state that a detective “conducted a preliminary examination of text messages on the phone and noted there to be repeated and specific threats by Si Phu to kill Christy Phu by shooting her.” Investigators said that “he has threatened surviving family members.”
Phu is being held on a $2 million bond and charges are expected later this week.
