On Monday, March 28, crews working for the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) are scheduled to begin construction on pedestrian safety improvements at the intersections of 30th Avenue Southwest with Southwest Avalon Way, and Southwest Avalon Way with Southwest Andover and Yancy streets, in West Seattle. Construction is anticipated to take approximately six weeks to complete, though is weather dependent.

This work will require temporary side street closures off of Southwest Avalon Way. Sidewalks and bicycle lanes around the work zone will also be closed temporarily during construction. King County Metro bus routes will not be affected. SDOT would like to thank the public for its patience while this work is completed.

Travelers through this area and local residents can expect the following construction impacts:
• Temporary full closure of Southwest Andover Street at Southwest Avalon Way for the first three weeks of construction, depending on the weather. Local access will be maintained from 32nd Avenue Southwest.
• Temporary full closure of Southwest Yancy Street and 30th Avenue Southwest at Southwest Avalon Way for the last three weeks, depending on the weather. Local access will be maintained from Southwest Genesee Street.
• Temporary on-street parking restrictions on Southwest Andover Street and Southwest Yancy Street.
• Temporary bicycle lane closures will require bicyclists to merge with motor vehicle traffic.
• Pedestrians will be detoured around the work areas but will not need to cross Southwest Avalon Way.
• Noise, dust and vibration.
• Construction activity will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.

The new curb ramps will comply with current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, improving mobility and access for pedestrians and people using assistive devices. Other improvements include a curb extension between 30th Avenue Southwest, Southwest Yancy Street and Southwest Avalon Way, as well as a new striped crosswalk and flashing crossing beacon across Southwest Avalon Way.

This project is part of a citywide effort to upgrade curb ramps throughout Seattle, to make our sidewalks accessible to everyone. This work is funded by the voter-approved “Levy to Move Seattle.”
