Shoplifter caught in the act

Staff at a security office located on S.W. Barton Street saw a man grabbing items from their store and placing them in his backpack around 2:30 p.m. on Mon., Jan. 9. He tried to leave the store without paying. When the employees approached him and asked about the items in his bag, the suspect became aggressive and pushed them aside. Staff detained the suspect, and officers arrived to take him to jail.

Burglary of construction site trailer

Around 11:46 a.m. Mon., Jan. 9, officers were dispatched to a residential burglary on 44th Avenue S.W. The site was a construction work trailer. The victim arrived at work at 7:30 a.m. and discovered that six of his power tools had been stolen. Officers submitted a cut padlock into evidence, as well as three fingerprints found on the scene.

Security cameras alert homeowner of suspicious activity

Police and a K9 unit responded to a call for a burglary on the 3900 block of 39th Avenue S.W. at 2:30 p.m. on Mon., Jan. 9. The victim said she was away from her residence but had surveillance cameras in the front and back of the house. She received an alert and saw a man at the back of her home, under an elevated back porch. The suspect was wearing a black ski mask covering his entire face. Officers were not able to find fingerprints. They added a copy of the surveillance footage into evidence.

Stolen motorcycles and assault

A man reported an assault to police around 1 p.m. on Tues., Jan. 10. He explained that he hauls trash and scrap metal and regularly works with a family residing on 18th Avenue S.W. who works on motorcycles and cars. Just after noon on Mon., Jan. 9, he stopped by their house to check on two mini bikes, a chopper and a scooter they were working on for him. When he arrived, he saw they were using his vehicles, and they told him they were keeping them. The mother slapped the victim’s phone out of his hand, and then punched him in the face. One of the men struck him in the head with a baseball bat. The victim was able to run back to his car, return home and iced his head. A number of neighbors witnessed the incident. The victim asked officers to prosecute the suspects for assault.

Assault in a vehicle

Around 12:30 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 7, a man was driving with his girlfriend and parked at the intersection of S.W. Cambridge Street and 27th Avenue S.W., where they waited for friends to join them in the car. Two men arrived and sat in the back seat. One had a pistol and fired it. The bullet went through the back of the chair and exited through the front of the girlfriend’s chest. The driver rushed the woman to the emergency room, where she went into surgery. The man who fired the gun was placed under arrest. The vehicle was towed to the evidence parking room. Nurses informed officers that the victim also had bruises on her neck and arm, as well as a black eye. Her mother said the injuries were from previous fights.
