LOOK UP, FOLKS. It seems that most people never look up or they would have the pleasure of seeing osprey along Alki. Here's a shot of an osprey that, even when a small crowd gathered, seemed unperturbed by all the attention. Before the first two onlookers showed up, most people didn't even notice this magnificent bird because they were too involved with cell-phone conversations. In flight, an osprey can be easily mistaken for a seagull.

With cranberries on the side...

A citizen asked for police to be present when he picks up items from his ex girlfriend's house, as she had threatened to have him killed. When officers asked about the specifics of the threat, the victim explained that his former paramour said she would have her friends stuff him with gerbils and cover him with leeches. Although he admits she was giggling when she said this, he gladly accepted information on how to obtain a protection order.

Students at Madison Middle School are less prepared for disaster, thanks to a greedy burglar.

At The Admiral

One of the advantages of having a second run theater in the neighborhood is the chance to catch a really good popcorn muncher one last time on the big screen where it belongs.

For West Seattleites the Admiral is that theater, and this October "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" is that movie.

"Revenge of the Sith" is peculiar in that we all know, long before we've seen the movie for the first time, where it's going to take us: Anakin Skywalker is about to be seduced to the dark side and become cinema's most famous asthmatic.

Pit bulls need control

We live in a community can only be successful if all members accept personal responsibility for their actions. The pit bulls that killed Arthur should be put down and the owners prosecuted for the slaughter of a loved pet that gave an innocent person much pleasure.

How many children or pets need to be killed or maimed before pit bulls are either outlawed or required to have additional licensing with severe consequences to the owners of the animals that cause harm? Anyone who has a pit bull knows that the breed is at higher risk of aggression than other breeds of dogs.

Market banners cut down

Last Sunday, the yellow Farmers Market banners that go up on the Fauntleroy pedestrian overpass each week were cut down and stolen.

These banners have been put up every Thursday evening and taken down on Sunday afternoon for five years without incident.

They are small and colorful and tasteful banners and are a gentle reminder that the Farmers Market will take place that Sunday.

They are also vinyl, professionally made, expensive and padlocked to the overpass, so cutting them down was more than just a small act of vandalism.

No to Southwest move

I am not in favor of allowing Boeing Field to be opened for Southwest Airlines or other commercial aviation. It makes no sense whatsoever to establish another commercial airport a few miles away from Sea-Tac.

I am very concerned about the noise that will affect us as residents. Most of us chose the location of our homes fully knowledgeable of the location of Sea-Tac. We have invested in our homes and properties never expecting a major commercial airport just a few nautical miles from us. We don't want the noise or the devaluation of our properties.

Locals in charge

The opening salvo in Mr. Tremaine's rambling letter (Sept. 28) requires a response.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers builds only what the U.S. Congress authorizes. If the Congress authorized a federal levee system to protect up to a category 3 hurricane with storm surge, then the Corps could not legally design or build protective works using category 4 criteria. Don't blame the Army Corps of Engineers. The fact that we even try to protect a city of half-a-million people below sea level is pure pork barrel politics.

Anime 'truly beautiful'

I was delighted to see Kyra-lin Hom's column in the Herald about anime, the wonderful animated films from Japan (Sept. 28). She gave your readers the background and I can give those interested a push in the right direction for finding them.

First, it's important to recognize that they are not "too foreign" or esoteric. All of those recently released are beautifully and seamlessly dubbed into English. Also, of the eight that my wife and I have seen, only two have settings are in Japan. Most are set what appears to be in Europe, from the same director, Hayeo Miyazaki.

Try an elevated bus lane

The monorail has appropriately met its fate so what do we do now?

West Seattle's problem isn't nearly as bad as the monorail board made us all think. West Seattle already has a dedicated bus lane over the West Seattle Bridge which connects to the dedicated bus street shortly after the bridge off-ramp.

I would like to suggest two ideas for a higher capacity long-term solution. Since the West Seattle Bridge was determined structurally sound to hold a monorail track, it should be structurally sound to hold a single elevated bus lane.
